Play In The Park in Union Park
I am very excited that the Ward 9 Play in the Park program will be offered this summer at Union Park.
This is a FREE drop in program for children ages 6-12. The program runs
week days from 9 a.m. to 12 noon starting July 3 to September 1. Union Park is on the northeast corner of Aquitaine and Tenth Line.

West Trunk Well drilling Erin Mills Pkwy and Britannia Rd intersection
A reminder that work continues on the Region of Peel construction of a large diameter trunk sanitary sewer along Erin Mills Parkway. The contractor is currently mining in both north and south directions from the tunnel shaft located at Erin Mills Parkway and Windwood Drive.
The excavation of the tunnel going north is approximately 67% complete. The excavation of the tunnel going south is approximately 87% complete. We anticipate completion of the mining work from this tunnel shaft by late Summer/early Fall of 2017.

Britannia Road Watermain Replacement and Road Resurfacing Winston Churchill Blvd to Erin Mills Pkwy
Work continues on the Region of Peel watermain and resurfacing work on Britannia Road West from Winston Churchill Boulevard to Erin Mills Parkway. The project is anticipated to be completed by November 2017.
This work will also include removing and replacing curbs, adding sidewalks and a multi-use trail, and installing a low impact development (environmentally friendly) storm sewer system. Click here for more information.

Safe City Mississauga's Neighbourhood Watch is a no-cost program to educate residents and mobilize communities for the purpose of crime prevention.
Neighbourhoods are safest when people know who their neighbours are and this program is an excellent way to get your neighbours working together, staying in contact and having fun.

Beat the heat this summer at City splash pads and enjoy some shade at a neighbourhood park.

Pets and Hot Weather
This is a reminder that in hot summer weather, please be careful with your pets. Do NOT leave pets in hot cars and do NOT walk pets during the hot part of the day. Hot pavement will burn their pads and the heat can cause heat exhaustion which can be fatal.

Dear Neighbour:
I hope you are enjoying your summer. I had fun celebrating Canada's 150th birthday at Celebration Square and there were other parties all around the city.
We have a had a mix of weather this year with much more rain than ever and more flooding. If you live in Ward 9 and have had flooding after heavy rainfall please call 311 and report it. We are trying to track where flooding is occurring. My own basement has flooded for the first time this summer and some of my neighbours have had similar problems.
If the weather is nice, make sure you get out and enjoy all our great trails and parks. If you are on a bike, remember you must have a bell or horn and sound it when approaching people from behind. Everyone must share our trails and lets keep everyone safe.
I encourage you to check my website and Twitter for heat alert updates so that you can get tips on how to stay cool particularly on days when the temperature rises.
Summer is a good time for me to get into our parks and see what needs improvements. If you have locations you would like me to visit email me at [email protected]

Civic Holiday City and Regional Office Closures
The City of Mississauga and the Region of Peel offices are closed for the Civic Holiday on Monday August 7, 2017 and will re-open on Tuesday August 8, 2017.

A reminder that there will be no waste collection on Monday due to the Civic Holiday. Waste collection will be one day later that week.

Residential Water and Sewer Line Warranty Protection Plan information
I am running this article again as I have had several inquiries regarding this topic. Homeowners recently received a letter in the mail from the Region of Peel with information on water and sewer line insurance from Service Line Warranties of Canada Inc. (SLWC). This program provides Peel homeowners with optional water, sanitary sewer line and in-home protection plan programs for their private side water and sanitary sewer pipes and in-home plumbing.
The program is endorsed by the Region following staff research with the City of Hamilton which introduced it last year and the Association of Municipalities of Ontario.
Region staff advised Council that many homeowners are not aware that all pipes that run from the water shut off valve into their home is theirs and that if there are any problems they must bear the cost of repairs.
All pipes leading from the shut off valve to the street are regional and repaired by the region. The shut off valve is a round plate usually in your driveway or front lawn and marks the property line.
Many insurance companies do not cover these repairs which can run into thousands of dollars in costs. Please check with your Insurance company to see if you are covered.
This is NOT a Region of Peel program. It is run by a private firm. Enrollment is entirely voluntary.
Some residents asked me if the region paid for the mailing. All costs are fully covered by the provider and no names or any other information is given to them by the region.

Road Safety Committee Vacancies 
In March of this year Mississauga City Council approved my motion to reinstate the Road Safety Advisory Committee.
Road safety is a priority. We need to ensure our citizens travel safely whether as a driver, cyclist or pedestrian. No fatality is acceptable but engineering alone cannot solve the problems on our roads. By reinstating the Road Safety Committee to support the work of our Traffic staff, we can implement more educational programs and involve our citizens in making our roads safer for all."
Advisory Committees are comprised of volunteer residents, city staff as well as 2 - 3 Councillors. The Road Safety Committee currently has 8 vacancies. If you are interested in getting involved in making our city a safer one to walk, cycle or drive in please click

Bike Safety 
I get many complaints about cyclists in the parks not sounding a horn or ringing their bells especially when coming up behind pedestrians. Last year new bike warning signs that I supplied were installed in our local trails around Lake Aquitaine. I hope that the signage will be a reminder to cyclists.
Under the Highway Traffic Act, all bikes must be equipped with a horn or bell and cyclists are required to sound them. I urge all riders to be courteous and alert pedestrians and other cyclists when you approach from behind.
Please follow these rules:
- Keep to the right of the trail
- Yield to pedestrians
- Advise when passing
- Avoid speeding
Being careful and courteous goes both ways. Pedestrians should do their part.
- Dogs must be kept on leashes unless in a leash-free zone. Always pick up after your dog.
- Stay to the right on trails, pass on the left
- Paying attention to cyclists may be difficult if you have headphones. Be aware as you may not hear a cyclist approaching even though they may be using their bell or horn.

Rabies Vaccine Baits for Raccoons 
You may have read that racoons carrying rabiies have been found in the area. As a result the Ministry of Natural Resources (MNRF)
started placing baits in Mississauga last week and will continue until they have covered all required area.
If you spot the bait please note:
- The khaki-green coloured bait are being hand dropped through wildlife corridors in the GTA and surrounding areas. The bait consists of wax-fat with an attractant flavour (vanilla-sugar). A label with a toll-free telephone number (1-888-574-6656) and "Do not eat" warning are on the exterior of the bait and a plastic package containing the liquid rabies vaccine is embedded in the centre. If found, the bait should not be touched, but left for raccoons, skunks and foxes to consume.

- Residents who find a bait should leave it alone. If the bait needs to be moved to a more appropriate place, use a gloved hand to prevent transfer of human scent to the bait to make sure it remains attractive to wildlife. Place the bait under shrubbery, away from pets and children.
- If a pet comes in contact or consumes the bait they should be fine, however it is recommended the pet owner contact their veterinarian as a precaution. The baits do not replace a veterinarian administered rabies vaccination.

One Million Trees Campaign Update 
The city has released a 2017 Earth Day video to celebrate Canada 150 and One Million Trees Mississauga. The video can be viewed here.
I am excited to report that we have reached a milestone of 250,000 trees planted with the One Million Trees Mississauga program this spring (as of today, that total is 254,087 trees)! That puts us almost an entire year ahead of our targets for each year to reach our goal of 1,000,000 by the year 2032!

New MiWay Route and Service  Improvements Began July 3
MiWay rolled out several route and service improvements on July 3 as part of the
MiWay 5 Service Plan (2016-2020).
The improvements include an extended route across the city to the Mississauga Airport Corporate Centre.
Route 39 - Britannia
will extend east to provide a direct connection from Meadowvale Town Centre to the Skymark Hub in the Mississauga Airport Corporate Centre, near the future Renforth transitway station.

Mississauga Latin Festival Kick-Off
I had the pleasure of bringing greetings as Acting Mayor and kicked off the Mississauga Latin Festival on July 28th. The Latin Festival is in its 8th year and was held at Celebration Square on July 29th. It was h

Canadian Latin Heritage Association which serves to
promote Latin culture in Canada.

Apple Self Storage Grand Opening
I was pleased to cut the ribbon on July 27th to open a new storage facility in Meadowvale. Apple Self Storage is located on Millcreek Drive at Derry Road. It is always a pleasure to welcome new businesses to the community.

Amacon Rotary Ribfest
I had a fun time at the Amacon Rotary Ribfest on July 16th at Celebration Square. I brought greetings as acting Mayor and presented the Peoples Choice Award for best ribs to Uncle Sams. Rotary member Natalie Hart did a great job again in organizing this wonderful event with great entertainment and great food.

Meadowvale Community Centre
I snapped a few photos when I was at the Meadowvale Community Centre and Lake Aquitaine on June 14th. I love seeing all the people doing Tai Chi under the pavilion and playing basketball on the court.
As well, the original Buy-a-Brick plaques have been installed in the lower foyer. These are the names of all those who helped fundraise to build our first Meadowvale Community Centre. I wanted to be sure the plaques were back in the new building. They are an important part of our history.

Tour de Sheridan 2017
I welcomed Tour de Sheridan riders to Lake Aquitaine in the morning of June 14th. This was
Sheridan College's First Tri-campus Bike Event.
Cyclists rode from all 3 campuses to and from Lake Aquitaine.

Special Olympics Opening Ceremony
It was very exciting to attend the Special Summer Olympics opening ceremony and watch as athletes marched in on June 13th. We had 75 athletes participating from Peel! I want to give a special thank you to Peel Regional Police for hosting the games.

Food Drive at Real Canadian Superstore
On July 8th I joined members of the Meadowvale Residents' Association in partnership with the Superstore at the Corner of Argentia Road and Winston Churchiill Blvd. for a Food Drive
to collect fresh food for Eden Food for Change. The Superstore also held a charity BBQ and all proceeds were donated to Eden.
We collected over 1800 lbs of fresh food for Eden. This is more than our last food drive. We collected lots of eggs and butter for those who need the food bank. It was an awesome day!

I joined the Mayor and several of my council colleagues to kick off the Canada Day festivities at Celebration Square. There was a
Parade of Nations and the day ended with spectacular fireworks. Not even a bit of rain in the afternoon dampened the spirit of the thousands of residents who came out to celebrate Canada's 150th birthday!

Muslim Council of Peel Eid Dinner
I attended the Muslim Council of Peel Eid Dinner on June 29th. The Muslim Council of Peel has over 17 member organizations and the Executive Director is my good friend Rabia Khadr who has also been a tremendous advocate for accessibility as a member of the Accessibility Advisory Committee. I enjoyed listening to the key note speaker who is a member of the Mississaugas of the New Credit.
