Dr. Jessica Ulrich-Schad & Dr. Candace May traveled to Sweden

Dr. Ulrich-Schad and Dr. May attended the International
Symposium on Society and Resource Management (ISSRM) June 18-22, in Umea, Sweden. The themefor the symposium was "Contested Spaces: Bridging Protection and Development in a Globalizin g World". 

While there, Dr. May presented on "Recreational Resources Users in South Dakota: Public Lands Use, Access, and Conservation".

Dr. Schad presented on "Perceived Community Adaptation to Oil Booms and Busts in the Bakken Region." 
 
Dr. Meredith Redlin in Slovenia

Dr. Meredith Redlin continues to collaborate with colleagues  
around the world. Dr. Redlin traveled to Slovenia in May of
this year and is pictured above with the class she worked
with there.

who on June 29 presented on behalf
of SDSU's Dr. Meredith Redlin and Dr. Mary Emery at a webinar
workshop in Russia. The workshop was entitled "Collaboration between universities and public organizations in regional social projects'
implementations (Russian and American experiences)".


The workshop was a joint venture between the Fulbright Program, Udmurt State Univeristy, SDSU, and the Center for Municipal Projects "LIFT". The objective of the workshop was to disseminate Russian and American "successful experiences of the univeristy collaboration with regional and local communities and public organizations" and to present the "best practices of academic involvement into social initiatives initiatives (experiences of American and Russian researchers, Fulbright alumni)." Both Russian professors served as visiting Fulbright Scholars in recent years to SDSU's Sociology department from Udmurt State University.
 
Dr. MaryJo Benton Lee in China

Dr. MaryJo Benton Lee, an adjunct assistant professor in the Department of Sociology and Rural Studies, recently completed five months at Yunnan University as a Fulbright U.S. Scholar to China.

In addition to teaching two graduate-level courses, Qualitative Research Methods and Writing for the Social Sciences, Dr. Lee did follow-up study of the ethnic minority teachers she first interviewed in 1997 as part of her dissertation research. That research resulted in the publication of a book titled "Ethnicity, Education and Empowerment: How Minority Students in Southwest China Construct Identities".

While there, Dr. Lee received an honorary professorship making her a permanent faculty member of Yunnan University. Yunnan University is located in Kunming, Yunnan Province, in the far southwest of China, and is
ranked in the top 100 institutions of higher education in China.

Congratulations to Dr. Patricia Ahmed (SDSU), Dr. Rebecca Emigh (UCLA),and Dr. Dylan Riley (UC Berkley) on receiving the CHS Barrington Moore Book Award Honorable Mention from ASA! The Barrington Moore Award is give n out
each year for the best book in the area of Comparative Historical Sociology Se ction (CHS). The award will be presented at the CHS section business meeting of ASA this August.

The honorable mention award was selected based on two volumes. Antecedents of Censuses From Medieval to Nation States, the first of the two volumes, examines the influence of social formations on censuses from the medieval period through current times. Changes in Censuses from Imperialist
to Welfare States, the second of the two volumes, uses historical and comparative methods to analyze censuses or census-like information in the United Kingdom, the United States, and Italy, starting in England over one-thousand years ago.

on this months publication of "Culture Clash? Predictors of Views on Amentity-Led Development and Community Involvement in Rural Recreation Counties"!

Among results, the authors indicated that "We found no clear consensus in rural recreation communities on attitudes toward development-related issues. Opinions about implementing rules to restrict development is an issue that splits rural recreation communities, with nearly one-half of residents on each side..." check out more at http://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/ruso.12165/full.

Current PhD Candidates Working on Dissertations  
may Qualify for Grant Funding GrantApp

The Horowitz Foundation for Social Policy is funding grants of $7,500 for PhD students working on their dissertations.  The goal is for these grants to support emerging scholars and "promote scholarship with a social policy application while encouraging "projects that address contemporary issues in the social sciences".

2.  During the fall 2016 semester there were 128 Criminal Justice Minors at SDSU. That same semester 175 students completed the CJUS 201 Intro to Criminal Justice course.
