Message from MWBC's Director

Wow! Can you believe that we're already more than halfway through the calendar year? Where's the time going? Well, here at the MWBC, we're excited to share with our stakeholders key milestones we achieved during the past fiscal year.

From July 1, 2016 - June 30, 2017 we assisted in:
  • 64 business starts,
  • 114 jobs created,
  • 38 jobs retained,
  • $1.9 million in sales growth,
  • $1.1 million in capital infusion, and
  • Established new strategic partnerships.

We are also pleased to have rolled out two new programs, with plans for a third that are tailored to provide further assistance to our women entrepreneurs. In December and February, we hosted our first international trade and advanced technology introductory seminars. We also developed strategic planning sessions with local, state, federal, and private sector procurement officials to collaborate on the rollout of the new procurement series in Montgomery and Prince George's Counties. Our goal for each new program is to ensure that our clients get access to the opportunities, resources, and subject matter experts that will help them strategically and sustainably scale their companies.

All of our accomplishments wouldn't have been possible without the support of our program funders. We thank the SBA, Citi Foundation, Montgomery County, City of Rockville, and Frederick County for their continual funding support, we also received funding for the 2017 fiscal year from Prince George's County Council and the City of Bowie. New private sector program support from Coca-Cola and Walmart also helped our efforts in further expanding our program offerings. We look forward to continue expanding on these new initiatives as we focus on helping our women entrepreneurs achieve new heights.

Enjoy your summer!

On Wednesday, July 12, Deborah Bodin Cohen, founder of The Story House and 2016 StartRight! third place winner, popped up in Rockville to showcase her mobile bookstore!

Bodin Cohen used a portion of her StartRight! money to purchase and furnish her trolley. MWBC staff and local patrons enjoyed adding to their summer book collections. View the photo album here
