Flooded #3 Fairway - July 22, 2017
Denise's Corner
Water, Water and
More Water!

As the saying goes "What goes up, must come down." This is very evident on the golf holes near the river. The water came up, stayed a while and is now beginning to recede. What's left is a lot of debris, silt, mud and a smell that will knock your socks off. As of Thursday July 27, there was still standing water on 3 fairway, 4 approach, 6 approach and in front of 5 black tee.

So here's the plan for clean-up:
Clean up begins!
  1. Clean up debris as the water recedes
  2. Wash silt and mud off cart paths
  3. Wait 10 to 15 days for flooded areas to totally dry out
  4. Assess damage
  5. Seed or sod damaged areas.
The hardest part of this whole process will be to have the patience to let those areas thoroughly dry out. Like I said, this could take a couple of weeks, so your patience and understanding are greatly appreciated. Although most of the affected areas look dead, I'm hoping some of the turf will come back.

On a lighter note, we were able to get a few things done while we were closed. Trees were trimmed, more fence repair, bunker faces were edged and tree stumps were removed, filled in and seeded. Even though part of the course was under water, the rest still needed to be mowed and watered. Looking forward to opening the course and having everyone back!
Golf Pro Tip
from Ron Skubisz
Golf Course Manager & PGA Golf Pro

One of the things that makes golf such a great game is that the entire family can play. Despite different skill levels, all players can participate and have fun. If you are playing golf with young children or those new to the game, I believe following the DisneyTM principle of viewing the world through the eyes of a child is appropriate. If your child can only hit the ball 50 yards, a 400-yard par 4 hole will look like a mile. At Pottawatomie, playing from the front tees allows kids to have a reasonable chance of success. To even out the odds, parents or those golfers will a little more experience, could try playing from the same tees and select a club that will allow you to hit the ball the same distance as your child. The reward will come when your child shouts with pride and joy that they hit it farther than you. With young junior golfers, spend time walking hole to hole with them to instill the great walk & talk aspect of the game in them. Pottawatomie offers an abundance of scenic views and challenges to spark a conversation about flowers, natural areas, local critters, the Fox River and more. Introducing a new generation of players to the great game of golf will drive new life into this fantastic sport (pun intended).
