Fruit Crate Label Contest ends September 2nd.
There's still time to design your own fruit crate label. You can even create your own brand! All entries will be shown at the Loomis Eggplant Festival on October 7th in the Friends of Library Booth.

Preserving your Garden's Bounty - Canning Demo
It is harvest time! How do you get the most from your garden and the fresh fruits and vegetables it has provided you this year? Nancy Colwell and Jenny Nitta will give a general canning "demonstration" to help you enjoy your garden's bounty all year long. This will be a class on "how-to" and the "equipment" you will need without actually canning as our kitchen facilities are not conducive to an actual demonstration.

NASA Presents Solar Eclipses - All You Ever Wanted to Know and MORE!
On August 21st all of North America will be treated to an eclipse of the sun. NASA representative Jayce Pearson will explain interesting facts about the sun, its importance to our world. He will also explain the different types of eclipses and why they are so rare. Jayce will tell us the best way to observe this rare eclipse. The class will conclude with creating your own solar eclipse viewer. To help us collect supplies for everyone to make a viewer please bring empty cereal boxes, both for your own project and to share. Start saving them now! So we can make sure we have enough materials for creation of the viewers please send an RSVP to

Ed Horton of Horton Iris Farm is known as a native of Loomis, but the truth is that he spent his early years in Penryn. Join us for some interesting and entertaining history as Ed regales us with stories of what life was like in Penryn in the 1940s and 1950s. Find out how life was before the Internet and color TV.

Placer County Genealogical Society presents Genetic Genealogy Workshops
Starting in September, Carol Dove of the Placer County Genealogical Society will be offering DNA workshops the first and third Thursday of every month from 10 a.m. - Noon at the Loomis Library Jesse Helms Community Room. She is planning to offer introductory concepts on the first Thursday of each month (Beginners) and more hands-on tools and advanced concepts for the second Thursday of each month (Intermediate - Advanced). These workshops will continue through the end of the year with just one workshop in December.
Sign ups are required, as space is limited
. Reservations start for the general public on
July 25
and will be on a first-come-first-serve basis. Please contact Carol Dove via email ([email protected]) and a reservation form will be sent to you.

Current Events - Weekly Discussion Group
"Current Events" is a class led by Jerry Fuchs. It discusses in a non partisan way the events of the day, both domestic and international. Jerry Fuchs was a newspaper publisher for 47 years with the San Francisco Examiner and Tribute Company and taught at Notre Dame University.
Registration is $25 for the semester (September to January). Starts Sept. 7 (There are two semesters per year and a break during the summer)

EDMO - DIY DaVinci: Submarines! (K-3rd)
This week students will travel back in time to the Renaissance period and study one of Leonardo Da Vinci earliest inventions, the submarine while exploring the concept of buoyancy. Da Vinci is famous for intersecting art, science and a maker mindset to create inventions and artwork that still impact our world today.

EDMO - Engineering: Geodesic Dome (4th-6th)
Students will be learning about Buckminster Fuller's geodesic dome and be introduced to geometric shapes and basic engineering concepts. Students will build individual geodesic domes, then collaborate to build a 'youth size' model of a geodome!

Special Story Time Friday - Meet "Big Daddy" from Blackwood Ranch
As a special treat this month "Big Daddy" from Blackwood Ranch coming to back Loomis Library to lead our Children's Story Time. The children will have the opportunity to meet "Big Daddy". Big Daddy is a certified therapy miniature horse. Big Daddy loves to promote reading. Big Daddy goes to schools and school events to visit with children. If your child is a reader, Big Daddy will listen to them read. If not, Big Daddy will help with the reading of a story by a ranch hand

Tracing Your Family Tree: How to Begin
Everything is relative in this free class presented by the Placer County Genealogical Society. It is packed full of information on the basic steps in how to get started tracing your family tree. Topics covered include
- Filling Out Forms - pedigree charts, family group sheets, and genealogy software.
- Organizing Your Work - genealogical numbering and filing systems.
- Ancestors in Your Mailbox - researching by correspondence via snail mail, e-mail and message boards.
- Wired for Research - online resources, including free wikis, web sites and web trees.
- On & Off the Shelves - resources in the library, archives and family history center.
- Conducting Original Research - finding historical documents & other sources of family data.

Altered Books for Beginners
Have you seen those cool altered books and junk journals? Peruse Pinterest and get inspired. I will bring prepared books for each of you (pre-gessoed with some pages removed), along with decorative papers, fabric, ribbons, magazines...all kinds of ephemera for you to play with. You bring scissors and a glue stick, along with any items that work with your chosen theme - photos, mementos, papers, ribbons, etc. You don't need a theme. Feel free to just come and wing it.
