The Passionist Earth & Spirit Center is a nonprofit, interfaith spirituality center whose mission is to help heal the relationship between human beings and the Earth through education and action in the areas of meditation and spiritual practices, social compassion, and environmental literacy. They believe that to have a flourishing Earth, we need a just and thriving human community made up of grounded individuals who cultivate interior peace and centeredness. This conviction has led us, over our 12-year history, to become the largest provider of mindfulness meditation instruction in the entire Midwest/upper South, having trained thousands of students. We also try to "walk our talk" and model our values by active environmental stewardship of our 21-acre property along the South Fork of Beargrass Creek.

The meeting will be held at the Earth and Spirit Center Barn. The Barn is located behind St. Agnes Church & Passionist Monastery, 1924 Newburg Road. Parking is available in the Sacred Heart Retreat parking lot, just south of the Passionist Retreat House, or in the St. Agnes parking lot, north of the church.
Now in its eleventh year, the purposes of the Louisville Sustainability Forum are:

Solar Over Louisville (SOL) announces its 2017 community workshop series for all with an interest in having their own solar system. For anyone who is wondering if installing solar energy at their own home or business makes sense, or what factors to consider in this decision, these free workshops are designed to answer those questions. Attendees will learn about solar energy basics, and how to determine if a solar system will be good for their specific circumstances. Contact Wallace McMullen: 502-963-5005.
""The cost of solar energy has fallen so rapidly in the past decade that today it is cost-competitive with other forms of energy," states Thad Druffel of the U. of L. Conn Center for Renewable Energy Research. "With the 30% tax credit and attractive financing options available today, many people find that the cost of the system is almost fully covered through energy savings while it is being paid off," says Nancy Givens, Solar Education Manager of Avery and Sun Solar. "After which a home's electricity becomes essentially free after paying the monthly connection charge."
Each workshop will cover basics about solar energy - what it is, how it works, its economic and environmental benefits, how to evaluate your site for solar potential, and next steps to take if you are interested in installing solar at your home or business. The presentations will be made by local solar installers. Ample time will be allotted for questions and answers.

At this gathering we will continue to build upon our efforts to provide equitable access to nature to young people by: hearing a few success stories, getting caught up on some of the exciting work going on in our community, exploring a common social media campaign and officially launching the Nature Rich Louisville Alliance.
This gathering is hosted by Bernheim Forest, Cultivating Connections, Jefferson Memorial Forest, Louisville Metro Mayor's Office, and the YMCA Let's Move Outdoors program.
The Nature Rich Louisville Alliance shares resources, builds relationships and works together to connect young people from throughout the community with outdoors experiences.

The Louisville TimeBank seeks to create a network of individuals and organizations that support and empower each other, which builds a social safety net that moves us towards being a more interdependent and resilient community.
Potlucks are a big part of the TimeBank community. We come together to share food, fun and build community all at the same time. Members get to know each other, and people who are not members can learn a bit about timebanking from chatting with our members at the potluck. Many exchanges get set up at our potlucks too!
We always encourage members to bring guests, and all community members are welcome too!
Please bring a dish that serves 12 and your own table service to make clean up easier. If you forget, there is plenty to borrow from the kitchen.

Showing of "Beargrass: The Creek in Your Backyard"

"Beargrass: The Creek in Your Backyard" is a discussion tool that engages all residents and visitors on the future of the creek. The documentary creates a common narrative that can be promoted by neighborhood and environmental organizations.
The goals of the documentary are simple:
* Promote an historical, natural understanding of Beargrass Creek,
its tributaries and the 67 square mile watershed.
* Provide an overview of how the creek has been used, abused over time and
explore the positive future-oriented solutions to restore the creek
and the ecological corridor while increasing public access.
* Highlight Beargrass Creek biodiversity.
* Encourage homeowners and businesses to use
best management practices on their land by featuring current examples
that everyone could adopt.
* Encourage organizations to participate in clean ups and to highlight
the current work to clean up the creek and how we can support it.
* Learn from other urban streams restoration efforts that have transformed their local neighborhoods around our region.
* Most important - To engage in a community-wide vision that works to
restore a clean and accessible Beargrass Creek.
Beargrass: The Creek In Our Backyard is another in a series of documentaries written and produced by Morgan C. Atkinson which examine important community matters. Thus far Atkinson has written and produced some 15 documentaries that have been broadcast on public television. In a 30+year career as an independent producer he has also produced many other commissioned works for corporate and non-profit clients. Atkinson has also produced several programs on Thomas Merton, the acclaimed writer and spiritual thinker. He has also helped Dr. Tom Owen produce six programs about various Louisville neighborhoods.
Our programs are always free and open to the public.

CONNECT at Bernheim

Now in its ninth year, CONNECT at Bernheim again will challenge minds and delight the senses. The night includes live musical performances, a light sculpture competition, and hands-on experiences for adults and families, including making art, drum circle participation, hacker creations and participatory science.
Artists will set up around Lake Nevin with funky, fun and spontaneous art displays and demonstrations for the third year. This year's art demonstrations include participants in CONNECTglow, a sculpture and performance art challenge in which participants create light sculptures without the use of a generator or AC power.
What goes better with music than food and beverage? This year's CONNECT will again have regional craft beer and wine! We will also have more food options than ever. Don't forget your refillable water bottle - we will have a Louisville Water Co. Pure Tap bubbler here so you can stay hydrated.

Migration Simulation at WorldFest Volunteer Training

We are looking for 100 volunteers to facilitate
the Walk A Mile In My Shoes Refugee Camp Simulation for
over 1,000 students on Friday, September 1.

The simulation will require over 100 volunteers to host seven different
experiential stations that include:
* a special scenarios group to create challenges for participants
* a camp school to learn a foreign language
* a medical tent to provide a health screening
* a clean water station
* a food tent to receive a daily ration
* a camp jail and border patrol officers
* a debriefing experience where it all comes together
Volunteering for the camp simulation is a great opportunity for work teams, civic groups, college students, and faith communities to host this powerful empathy education experience. Training will be provided.

Maybe you have been connected to LSURJ through Facebook or email but you would like to know more about us. These welcoming one-hour newcomer/orientation sessions are meant to provide a brief overview of our mission, our values and our history. Plus, we'll show you some ways to get involved with more of the work from wherever you start from. No experience necessary, just a desire to help make racial justice a reality. Pick a time and location that works for you. Additional dates and locations will be added. We will be having these one-hour sessions monthly at public libraries. Each meeting will be capped at 20-30, depending on the size of the room at the library. We will monitor FB RSVPs and determine if there will be a need for "tickets".
There will be one session scheduled at Mama's Hip with play space for families with young kids. For others, there will not be dedicated space for child care provided, but kids of all ages will be welcomed in the meeting space. Please join us!

for High School / College Students
This certificate program lasts from October 2017 to April 2018 with sessions every other Sunday from 6-8 pm. Students are expected to attend at least 50% of the sessions. Meetings will be held at the Earth & Spirit Center at 1924 Newburg Road, 40205.
Learn about Louisville's environmental issues, gain the skills needed to be an activist, plan and implement environmental events, meet key players in Louisville's environmental advocacy community, and earn a certificate of completion.
