Kudos to Some Unsung Husky Heroes

As our Huskies are busy in high-profile service learning efforts such as last weekend's Pier to Pier walk, working in the Blue Butterfly Preserve, or winning playoff games in volleyball or other sports, I became aware of a couple of "unsung hero" groups this week.

First, in our football game against Avalon on Catalina Island last Friday, one of the opposition players was badly injured and had to be  medevacked  from the island to Torrance Memorial Hospital. On Saturday morning, our coaches and players visited the player in hospital and consoled the player and his family who were very surprised and grateful to see them all arrive.

Second, our annual upper school fall play will not happen this year and here's why: The planned-for play involved the death of a mother. The cast had been rehearsing for six weeks and were a little over a month from the production date. Out of respect for Lisa Patterson and her family, and with a sensitive eye towards themselves and the rest of us, the cast decided to abandon the play, and begin rehearsing another one. It has been a struggle, given the shortened time-frame, and this week, in consultation with Ms. Goodspeed and me, they made the painful decision to stop rehearsing. Other academic pressures, including college applications in some cases, were beginning to suffer, so they quietly decided they would not put on play this year. Many of them will instead feature in the upcoming One-Acts, dates still to be determined.

Sometimes the Pillar of Sound Character shows itself in quiet ways. And just think of the myriad other ways, some even quieter than this, that our young men and women are growing under the partnership guidance of their parents, teachers, and coaches.

Kudos!

Summer Class

In order to increase flexibility during senior year scheduling, Rolling Hills Prep and Renaissance are offering Government and Economics, a requirement for seniors, over Summer. A student taking the course would then have the ability to take an additional elective class during senior year.

Interested students are required to fill out a brief form that must be returned by Monday, November 20. Both the form and more information can be found by clicking the button below.

Discussing Gender Identity at RHP and Renaissance

Tuesday, November 14th, 2017 from 4:30-5:30pm
As a precursor to November 16th's presentation to students, "Gender Identity and Expression," we offer a preview and an opportunity for questions and discussion for parents by  Dr. Marvin Belzer, Director, Division of Adolescent and Young Adult Medicine, Keck USC School of Medicine.

Please join us for an informational event where Dr. Belzer will review the latest research in youth gender identity and expression, discuss how physicians and therapists support youth and their families, and provide information to assist parents to discuss these issues with their children.

We have become aware that some parents may wish their children to opt out of the student presentation for various reasons, an option we discourage but are nevertheless glad to provide. Some parents may believe that such conversations should be held ONLY between parent and child, and we would respect that viewpoint. Please let School Counselor Emilie Padua-Douglas know if you wish to exercise this option and please know that any children who are held out will be treated with the respect you have come to expect from our schools.

Click below to RSVP by Sunday, November 12, 2017.

Thank You For Supporting Our Schools With a Gift to
The Husky Fund

The Husky Fund is our most important annual fundraising priority, providing immediate resources needed for the current academic year, ensuring the strength and success of our programs. This year our target is 100% parent participation, in 100 days, to reach our goal of $750,000 to benefit our students.

How much each family contributes is a personal decision. Gifts typically range from $25 to more than $25,000 - a wide range underscoring the importance of each gift, resulting from the generous nature of our socio-economically diverse community. All gifts are greatly appreciated and each makes an impact on every student's experience at RHP and Ren. The only gift too small is no gift at all. Thank you for reviewing the suggested giving levels on our website.

Joe Neubauer

"Looking back at my time with Williamson, I figured out why he never directly told me what to do. He didn't want me to be dependent on him for answers, which is why he let me figure it out for myself. Now I know the answer to my shut-in problem is to get out more and do things outside my comfort level, but to this day I struggle with it and I think I always will, but I also believe I'll get better at it or at least try to. As long as I try my best, I think that's all that matters."

Shota Ogomori

"This close, family-like school environment gave me an opportunity to enjoy life. Before, I was too busy thinking about my well-being and where I stood in rankings for my competitions. The school gave me a place to breathe . Although I continued to think that my task was to not let the people who cheered for me down, I also found out that you can take a moment to relax sometimes. It was those small laughs and jokes that held me through my toughest times. "

Kudos to the Varsity Girls Volleyball Team for finishing strong with 2nd place in the Coastal League for the season.

Congratulations to the Varsity Football Team for finishing 1st in the Express League this season.

In addition to Halloween, students celebrated Spirit Week and dressed up for daily themes.

Ms. Begley has had several service learning trips to the Blue Butterfly Preserve and teaches students about the importance of conservation. Her next outing will take place on Saturday 11/18 and volunteers are welcome!
