MILTON'S PARTNERS
IN EDUCATION

This week, the Georgia Department of Education released the 2016 College and Career Readiness Performance Index (CCRPI) for all schools in Georgia. The CCRPI is way the Georgia Department of Education measures schools and school districts and gives them a rating on a 100-point scale. Our 2016 score is 95.9, which is a significant increase from last year.

Milton's gains are the result of an amazing student body, a dedicated group of educators and support staff, and the most supportive community in the county, state, and nation! While it is always great to see high levels of student achievement, we will continue to support the development of whole child.  When thinking about our school, I ask you to look at the experience you and your child are having at Milton High School. Is he or she achieving at levels they are capable of achieving? Do they have supporting, caring teachers? Are they happy?

As the principal of this amazing school, who leads a supportive, caring staff, I am committed to the achievement and happiness of our students. That's what drives our work every day. We are committed to teaching kids in the best way possible. With your support we will continue to move forward and grow stronger.
Milton High School students who are enrolled in Economics during 1st Semester will be taking their EOC on Thursday, December 15. S tudents will receive information regarding their assigned testing time and location from their teachers in the next week. Students who are taking Economics online will receive their information from Administrative Assistant in charge of testing, Mr. Fullilove.

DBT: How it Helps Students
Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is designed for individuals who need assistance with managing their emotions, increasing their tolerance for distress, and developing relationships with others. DBT is a research supported, effective form of treatment for individuals with Borderline Personality Disorder, Depression, Anxiety, OCD, Bipolar disorder, PTSD, and Eating Disorders. While DBT works well with these issues, it is also effective for anyone who needs help with emotion regulation, distress tolerance, and interpersonal relationships.

DBT involves 3 modules which continuously run throughout the year and are led by an intensively trained DBT Therapist. The modules are  Emotion Regulation, Distress Tolerance, and Interpersonal Effectiveness. So what will you learn and how do the modules help?
  • In Emotion Regulation, individuals learn how to manage the intensity of their emotions and decide whether reactions, feelings, and behaviors are effective in their life. For example, a student might become overwhelmed and stressed at school and decide to skip class. DBT can help that student learn to manage their feelings and react to their stress in a way that does not negatively impact their life.
  • In the Distress Tolerance module, individuals learn to increase their tolerance for negative emotions. For example, if a student has a panic attack before tests or before presentations, DBT would be helpful in teaching the student to soothe themselves and tolerate the anxiety without having a panic attack.
  • Lastly, the Interpersonal Effectiveness module teaches skills to help individuals get along better with other people. Sometimes individuals need assistance learning to connect with other people, how to compromise, how to be interested in others, how to have effective conflict that doesn't end relationships, how to end unhealthy relationships, and how to tell the difference between a healthy and unhealthy relationship. For example, there might be a student who struggles making friends or maintaining friendships. DBT can help that student learn skills to connect with people and create genuine, lasting relationships.
While individual counseling with an intensively trained DBT therapist in combination with the DBT skills modules is strongly encouraged, it is not required. The Summit DBT therapists also enjoy collaborating with outside therapist to help provide the best treatment possible for all clients. If you'd like to make an appointment with 1 of the 4 intensively trained DBT therapists or register for classes, please call the Summit at 678-893-5300 or visit our website at www.summitcounseling.org.

5 Signs that You Need DBT
Sometimes life can feel like an uphill climb, in the rain, in knee deep mud. Maybe it feels like you can never catch a break and everywhere you turn, something more challenging occurs. Maybe you feel like your emotions dictate your life and you're exhausted and ready to give up. If any of this sounds familiar, keep reading to find out if DBT could help you change your life.
  1. You're riding an emotional rollercoaster that never stops Do you ever feel like your whole day or week is spent fighting with others, crying, and feeling overwhelmed? Or maybe it takes you a long time to come down from emotional reactions? DBT can help! DBT focuses on teaching skills to help you manage your emotions, effectively handle conflict, and learn to tolerate difficult emotions.
  2. You have difficulty in relationships Maybe it's hard for you to connect with or trust other people in your life, you notice that you are frequently not getting what you want out of relationships, or it's difficult for you to get along with friends and family. DBT can help you learn effective skills to get your needs met, feel good about yourself in interactions, and maintain healthy relationships.
  3. You are using ineffective coping skills to manage emotions Are you actively self-harming or thinking about self-harm? Have you attempted suicide or you are thinking about suicide? We all deserve to have a life that's worth living, and A DBT therapist can work with you to manage these urges and help you find different, more effective long-term solutions so that you can find your life worth living.
  4. Therapy has not worked for you in the past Perhaps you've tried different therapists, different medications, and nothing seems to work for you. DBT is a research supported therapy that works well with treatment resistant symptoms such as depression and anxiety.
  5. You're an adult or an adolescent

DBT is an effective therapy for adults and adolescents because it helps individuals learn healthy coping skills to manage emotions, tolerate distress, maintain relationships, and practice mindfulness regardless of your stage of life. DBT is a research supported, protocol driven therapy used to help individuals struggling with a variety of issues. At the Summit, we have a team of 4 intensively trained DBT therapists, ready to help adolescents and their parents create more fulfilling lives. Call us today at 678-893-5300 or visit our website www.summitcounseling.org to schedule a DBT assessment with a therapist located at Milton High School or our main office location.

PSAT/NMSQT scores are coming soon! On December 12, students who provided their email address on their PSAT/NMSQT answer sheet will receive an email reminder from College Board explaining where and how to view their scores. COLLEGE ADMISSION INFORMATIONCOLLEGEINFO
When it comes to college admissions, everyone has the same question: "What are my chances of getting in?" The answer is not always clear, partly due to the way colleges admit students. The most important data is not what you see posted on the school's website, rather it is data that represents the admission decisions of ACTUAL Milton students. We are implementing a new process to begin accumulating meaningful data that will help guide families through college applications.

STEP 1 - Complete the Senior Advisement Form
This will help your Counselor and the College and Career Center assist students with picking schools and planning applications.
If you have not completed this form it can be found here: https://goo.gl/forms/7PKWVGByxowjbykj1

STEP 2 - Complete the Milton High School College Decision Form
This form needs to be completed for each school to which you apply whether you are accepted, denied or deferred. You will be able to go back and edit this form as you receive admission decisions and scholarships, and then again when you decide which school you will attend.
This form can be found here:
https://goo.gl/forms/0aT0wJLpfL1Ge5nJ3

Finally, we are launching a new Facebook page to celebrate the Future of Milton 2017. Once you have decided which school you would like to attend, please share a photo and a little bit about your decision to attend that school.
