Brandywine Project Wins Potomac ASLA Honor Award

Recently, Outdoor Illumination was asked to team with Campion Hruby Landscape Architects to transform the Brandywine Garden into two vastly different gardens that embrace the dichotomy of order and disorder in our lives. The garden was overrun with weeds, invasive plants and a herd of hungry deer, so the landscape architects had quite a challenge as they used an existing ravine to divide the land into two garden districts. The entry pool and the gardens became extensions of modern architecture. In these areas, the designs were distilled, producing simple forms, straight lines, and a graceful blending of hardscape and plant materials.

Special characteristics of the garden include a pervious gravel-lok driveway, monolithic slabs and stairs; a fifty foot pool with vanishing edge; and an ipe bridge. The project provides a lasting example of how an overgrown site can be transformed into an urban retreat and natural sanctuary without succumbing to nature entirely.
