Peabody Faculty presenting at National Association for Gifted Children Convention
Tolly Merrick, Middle School Social Studies teacher, and Robin Fox, Grade One teacher, will both be presenting at the 64th Annual
National Association for Gifted Children Convention. The conference is being held in Charlotte, NC from November 9-12 and attracts the foremost researchers and teachers in the gifted education community. We are proud that our faculty will be able to share their expertise with other professionals.

'l'll Have What She's Having": Menu Choices for Middle Schoolers-
Tolly Merrick
Middle school students are savvier than ever, and lighting their intellectual fire in the classroom is always on the gifted teacher’s agenda. Whether you are a novice or experienced educator, this presentation on summative assessment menus will help your students produce the best work possible in the gifted middle school classroom. Summative menus offer greater flexibility for both the student and teacher; when properly designed and implemented, they maintain accountability as well as interest for gifted learners.
All the World's a Stage: Sparking a Love of Shakespeare in the Primary Grades-Robin Fox
Shakespeare is typically associated with high school English classes, but there is no reason why his writing cannot be introduced earlier in a child’s education. This session will provide an overview of the study of Shakespeare in an elementary school language arts curriculum. Using the comedy “A Midsummer Night’s Dream,” students as young as first grade begin to read selected scenes, use comprehension strategies to interpret the language, analyze themes, and perform short passages. Teaching experiences of the presenter will be shared and examples of writing and reading lessons will be provided.

Virginia Diversity Network
Peabody School recently joined the
Virginia Diversity Network
(VDN). The VDN was created as an association for Virginia independent schools to help promote diversity within our individual school cultures.
Each school year, the network offers a variety of workshops and programs for faculty and administration, as well as a space for honest dialogue about identity work and inclusion in our schools.
The VDN seeks to promote deeper understanding of diversity at individual schools and develops programming that explores the concepts of race, ethnicity, gender, religion, age, socioeconomic status, ability, and sexual orientation, among all other diverse dimensions.
Three members of our diversity committee attended a VDN workshop this week entitled, "
Overcoming Bias: Becoming Active Change Agents." The diversity committee, comprised of both staff and parents,
is charged with
examining our school culture through the lens of students, staff, parents, and the local community.

This week in Middle School...
- Students in grades 7&8 are finalizing their Leadership Academy service projects.
- The soccer team lost a hard fought and wet match against Tandem.
- The 8th grade finished their cell board games to be tested by the 4th and 5th grades next week. We'll share pictures next week!
- 8th graders are also turning in some very thoughtful Holocaust Memorials this week...honoring those that were courageous and stood up for the persecuted, at great risk.
A Look Ahead...
- The volleyball team has a home match starting at 4:30PM on Tuesday, October 17th against Buford Middle School.
- The soccer team has a match at Tandem School on Thursday, October 19th, starting at 4:30PM.

2017-2018 Annual Fund
The 2016-17 Peabody Annual Report was mailed out last week, and we hope that you enjoy it.
The 2017-18 Annual Fund is now officially underway! Thank you in advance for your consideration of a donation to Peabody School for the 2017-18 year. As a "thank you," please note that Annual Fund donations received prior to December 31, 2017 will receive the new Peabody "mobile pocket" for your cell phone! World Peace Game
Our fifth grade students will be participating in the
Work Peace Game this spring and we are in need of your help! The World Peace Game is a hands-on political simulation that gives players the opportunity to explore the connectedness of the global community through the lens of the economic, social, and environmental crises and the imminent threat of war. The goal of the game is to extricate each country from dangerous circumstances and achieve global prosperity with the least amount of military intervention. As “nation teams,” students will gain greater understanding of the critical impact of information and how it is used. The game will be facilitated by Mr. Brinkop as part of the students' schedule this spring. Mr. Brinkop attended a week long training this summer to be certified as a facilitator.
As we prepare to offer this to our students, we need your help to build the board. Please see the
list of materials needed for us to play the game and if you are willing donate anything, please drop it off in the main office. Used pieces are more than acceptable. Thanks!

Peabody Sweatshirt Orders!
The weather is (finally!) getting colder, and the holidays are coming! Treat your favorite Peabody Panthers to a new sweatshirt to keep them warm this winter!
Sweatshirt order forms are in today's Friday Folders and are due back to the Front Office on Monday, October 23. The sweatshirts run small so ordering a size up is a good option!

FRIDAY FROLICS
– Friday Frolics start today! Friday Frolics are a great time for K-2 families to meet and connect after school on Friday afternoons.
Please join us at Belmont Park today (and all Friday afternoons in October) from 3:15-4:30, weather permitting. Water and light refreshments will be provided. Siblings are always welcome!

Admissions News
- Fall Open House is October 18th from 9AM-2PM. Please pass along to any prospective families! Interested guests can RSVP to attend by clicking here.
- Bring A Friend Day (1st-6th grades only) is Tuesday, November 7th! Public schools will be closed and this will give us an opportunity to invite prospective students for a visit following our Admissions Open House. We would like you to consider inviting students in grades 1st - 6th who would enjoy visiting Peabody and potentially benefit from a Peabody education.
- Due to the high level of popularity of this day and limited space, we will only be able to invite students who have not already participated in BAF Day in the past.
- Please email diane.krehmeyer@peabodyschool.org with the name, grade and parent contact/email information of a student to be invited (please check with them first to see if they are interested!)
- Spaces for visiting friends will be assigned first come, first served. For planning purposes, the deadline is Friday, OCTOBER 20th to provide the name and contact information of a student to be invited.

Parent Information Center
- We have had some complaints from our Mill Creek neighbors that some parents have been using Mill Creek Road as a turn around in the morning to avoid the left hand turn onto Avon Street Extended. Please refrain from doing this as it does present a safety hazard for cars coming up Mill Creek Road. Thank you for your cooperation.
- Box Tops Submission Approaches! Our first Box Tops submission of the year must be mailed by October 31st. Please bring your collections to school by October 27th and place them in the box in the main entryway.
- WANTED! Cardboard for a 5th grade Technology project - the larger the better! Boxes of all sized and shapes, flattened cardboard, paper towel rolls - any and all gladly accepted! Please drop off in the computer lab during the next 2 weeks (October 11- 20th.) Thank you!
