The Dangers of Vaping
An Important Message To Parents From Student Assistance Counselor Amanda Feeney

VAPE PENS- What Are They and Why Do We Care?

Thanks to the abundance of research and marketing around the consequences of tobacco use, teen cigarette use has decreased significantly over the past decade. While this is a huge celebration- with the decrease in popularity of smoking, the increase in popularity around vaping has emerged.

What is "Vaping"

Vaping is one of the newer crazes among teenagers and young adults today. Vaping is the act of inhaling and exhaling the vapor of some form of e-liquid from an electronic delivery device, such as a vape or hookah pen.

There are hundreds of different models of electronic delivery devices that come in all different shapes, sizes, colors, and designs. Some are used specifically for nicotine replacement (such as e-cigarettes), some are used with various e-liquids that you can buy from local shops or online, some are used for marijuana (liquid, wax/dabs or herb), and many can be used interchangeably.

As the vaping trend has progressed hundreds of different e-liquids have emerged on the market. E-Liquids are the liquids that are heated/vaporized and then inhaled by users, more often than not causing some kind of "buzz". While some of these liquids may just be flavored juices, most contain high concentrations of nicotine. Users can also purchase or make liquid THC (oil and wax) to be used with the pens. The liquid is put into the device and heated, causing it to vaporize which is then inhaled.

Is It Safe?

"Vaping" is still too new of a trend for researchers to identify all the potential health effects but what we do know is:

·       E-liquids are not regulated by the FDA, and manufacturers do not  need to list all of the ingredients in the liquid. This makes it difficult for researchers or anyone to know the real impact

·       Common ingredients in most liquids may appear to be harmless however, the high temperatures and heating of the liquids (which has only intensified with the newest trend "dripping") can drastically change the composition of these ingredients making them toxic.

·       Whether in a traditional cigarette or e-liquid, nicotine is still an extremely addictive substance and has the same impact on the adolescent brain.

·       Nicotine has been shown to significantly impact brain development including the reward system and brain circuits that control attention and learning. Possible impact includes permanent difficulty with attention and impulse control, mood disorders, and a primed brain for other addiction to other substances.

·       E-Liquids and waxes used with vaping contain a significantly higher concentration of nicotine and THC which carry health concerns such as nicotine poisoning and risky side effects from THC such as increased psychiatric symptoms. Because of the ease of use, the social culture around vaping, and the different enjoyable flavors many teens are consuming well over the recommended amount and making themselves seriously ill.

Why are Schools Concerned?

In addition to just wanting our students to be safe and healthy, vaping has created another barrier in trying to keep our schools and students safe. Due to the fact that the vaping typically does not generate any kind of odor (or if it does it may just smell fruity) it is difficult for adults to detect when a student has been vaping at school, including the use of marijuana or another home-made liquid which has included other illicit substances for the user to get high.

Senior Spotlight : Ben Soares
An Article by Math Teacher Amanda Bradley

Ben Soares is an exuberant and delightful young man. He brings an abundance of positive energy to the classroom.  It was a joy to have him in Precalc last year. He came to class everyday with a smile on his face. He was always ready to learn and willing to participate. Well, except for those days he walked into class asking if we really had to do math, but that was probably because he was so tired from giving his all in PE the period before. For the record, he always buckled down and did his math anyway.
Mr. White has "had the pleasure of coaching Ben in both, football and basketball." He has found Ben to be a "natural leader" and an "awesome kid to be around." Mr. White also noted that Ben always has a smile on his face. Throughout his time in high school, Ben has participated in football, basketball, baseball, and track. Ben clearly has a love for sports and enjoys being active, so it should come as no surprise that one of his favorite classes here at Sanborn was Fitness my Way.
When Ben is finished with school, he would like to run his own construction business. He has already taken a step toward achieving that goal by completing the Building and Construction course offered at the Seacoast School of Technology (SST). In his time at Sanborn and SST, Ben has demonstrated a great work ethic and a true desire to fulfill his potential. If those qualities are any indication, then Ben undoubtedly has a bright future ahead of him.

Sanborn Hosts I am College Bound / I Applied Day
Monday, November 13, 2017 Hosted by Our Counseling Office

New Hampshire's "I Am College Bound/I Applied" campaign is designed to help high school seniors navigate the college admissions process and ensure that each student pursues a post-secondary education by inviting them to submit at least one college admission application during a particular school day with the support of their school and local higher education professionals.
While special focus is placed on assisting students who would be the first in their families to attend college and students who may not have otherwise seriously considered applying to college, all students are encouraged to participate and can sign up for a time slot in the guidance office. In 2017, this campaign will take place at Sanborn throughout the day in the Library on Monday, November 13th.

Follow-up support and materials regarding completing the college admissions and financial aid processes are distributed as well.  There will be no cost for any applications to any NH college or university submitted as part of the event; fee waivers will be available to all participating students.  Additionally, each student who sends off an application on the 13th as part of the event will be entered to win a $500 scholarship.  Further information and information about how students register to participate in Sanborn's 'I Am College-Bound/I Applied' day will be distributed in Senior Advisories.

This campaign is part of the American College Application Campaign, a national effort to increase the number of first-generation and low-income students pursuing a college degree or other higher education credential.

The American College Application Campaign is just one of many national efforts, including ReachHigher and BetterMakeRoom , designed to encourage all of the nation's students to complete their education after high school.

First Annual Sanborn Girls Basketball Blue/ Gray Night
A Message From Coach Gray
The Sanborn Girls Basketball Program will host 1st Annual Blue/Gray Night on November 17th, 2017. The event will start at 5PM at the Sanborn Regional High School and will involve all levels of female student athletes in the Sanborn Basketball Program. The night will be open to the community and will be a family friendly event that will have raise money for the Girls basketball program and collect food donations as part of the Girls Varsity Basketball Team involvement in Hoops for Help Food Drive.

The event will feature a full inter-program scrimmage with each level taking the court for a quarter and competing against each other for bragging rights. The Middle School Programs with female players from the A Team, B Team and Ellis Teams will compete in the first quarter of the game. The High School Girls Reserve team take each other on in the Second Quarter. Our halftime show will consist of games for the crowd and our Youth Rec players in a mini scrimmage. The 3rd quarter will see the Girls Junior Varsity square off and the final quarter will be finished off by the Girls Varsity Team. The score will keep building all night and we will see whether the Blue side or the Gray side will take home the win.

Admission for this event will be 3 dollars a person with 5 and under free. Admission is only a $1 a person if they bring a food donation. There will also be concessions, fan contests between quarters and Sanborn basketball merchandise for purchase at the game. We hope that the families of our players and the members of the community will come out and fill our gym for what should be a great night of fun. All of the food donations will be collected and brought to the Holy Angels Food Pantry in Plaistow, NH. This pantry serves the areas of Fremont, Kingston and Newton as well as other surrounding areas. Our Program's Varsity Team is competing in the Hoops for Help pre-season tournament on November 25th. We will be playing the NH Division 2 Champs, Lebanon at 3PM that day at Farmington High School. The Boys Varsity will be playing Nute following our game. Teams that collect the most food donations wins the tournament.

If you have any questions or would like to be one of our sponsors for the night, please e-mail Girls Varsity Coach Brian Gray at [email protected] .
SRHS Names November Staff Members of the Month
Congratulations to Ms. Graham and Doc Young!

Each month, Sanborn Regional High School honors two staff members who have gone "above and beyond" on behalf of students. We are proud to announce that the following two staff members have earned the November Staff Member of the Month honor:

Katie Graham, English Teacher

Ms. Graham is an English teacher at Sanborn, and outside of the classroom she has taken on a number of new responsibilities this year and has been doing an awesome job! Her work with poetry club has taken the club in a great new direction. She is also a co-advisor for the freshmen class of 2021. Additionally, Ms. Graham has helped to revamp the Senior English curriculum. Her latest unit was all about job readiness and students learned cover letters and resumes and they applied for different jobs and set up interviews with her. She really goes above and beyond for her students each and every day!

Dr. Timothy Young, Math and Science Teacher

Dr. "Doc" Young wants all of our students to be successful. He is always available for extra help and works to make sure students understand what is going on in his math and physics courses. He leads our math team and recently took them to WPI for an invitational math meet so they could see what a college campus looks like. They were able to tour the math and science labs and gained ideas for future endeavors from a Sanborn alumni who is majoring in bio-informatics. He speaks to the pillar of scholarship in that he thinks all students should strive to be lifelong learners, encouraging students to learn from all aspects of life and not just what occurs in the classroom. Thanks for inspiring Sanborn students to achieve Doc!
