News from American Greyhound recapping October and looking forward to November.

October by the Numbers
In October, we brought in 22 dogs; 20 from West Memphis, Arkansas and 2 lurchers.   We had 7 adoptions.

This makes our year-to-date totals 171 adoptions, 165 AG arrivals, and 15 hauled for other groups.
Arthur

Arthur had a "ruff" start at life: being passed from one owner to the next several times, having an unfortunate mishap with a horse along the way, and not receiving the proper vet care. He was eventually handed off to the wonderful people of the Ohio Lurcher Program who saw to it that he received vet care for his injured leg which unfortunately had to be amputated. After a great deal of suffering with a mangled disfigured leg Arthur was finally free from his past and is eagerly looking forward to his new future.

After some time to heal Arthur came to me and my wife as a foster until his forever mom was ready for him, and in this time we quickly learned that this dog is not disabled by any means. Never once had he allowed his loss to prevent him from doing everything any other dog would do. He loves to run and play with our two dogs, loves to snuggle, and enjoys his squeaky toys. He's a sweet young man full of life, love, and kisses, with a heart bigger than himself and an absolute love for children. So if you ever get the honor of meeting this gentle boy don't pity him, that's not what he wants, rather a few ear rubs and hug would do.

A Freezin' Good Reason for People with Warm Hearts to Support American Greyhound

November is the month to remind us to be thankful for the many things in our life.  What better way to show your appreciation for your hound than by joining American Greyhound's 2018 Polar Bear Plunge and helping raise some funds for the hounds!  As is our tradition, our plunge will occur in the morning on January 1, 2018 at North Avenue Beach, Chicago, IL.

This year our plunge will feature three divisions of plungers:
Walruses:  This division will feature our virtual plungers who would rather plunge into their warm wooly blankets instead of the icy cold lake.

Penguins:  This division will showcase the plunging talents of our volunteers who want to participate but can't quite make themselves go all the way under the water.

Polar Bears:  This is the traditional division in which a plunger head is entirely submersed in the icy cold water of Lake Michigan.

So if you're ready to make a big difference in the lives of some very appreciative greyhounds, please  register  to build the easiest fundraising page ever. It makes it simple for others donate and easy for you to fundraise.  Participants who raise at least $25 in donations from friends, family and co-workers get the privilege of receiving a commemorative Polar Bear Plunge long sleeve t-shirt and entrance into a Post-Plunge Warm Up Party, plus the chance to win additional prizes.

If you're not quite ready to freeze yet, you can also make a donation to one of the polar bears   here Any amount, no matter how large or small can go a long way to helping a greyhound find a forever home.

If you have any questions at all, please contact Sarah Gasienica, our Polar Plunge Coordinator at (219) 263-8742 or [email protected]
It's Time to Start Thinking About the Auction

I know that many of you have attended at least one of our Winning Hearts, Not Races benefit auctions.  And, because I know that, I also know that you had a wonderful time.  And, just like Ringling Brothers-Barnum and Bailey Circus, this event just keeps getting bigger and better every year (well, the auction gets bigger and better every year, but Ringling Brothers-Barnum and Bailey Circus actually shut down this past May, but the analogy is kind of neat).

Well, this year we are already planning some big surprises that we hope you'll like.  But, before we get too excited about attending, we need to get excited about recruiting an auction committee to help us make our 8th annual auction bigger and better than last year (which will take some doing as last year the online bidding was a huge hit).

This year's auction will be chaired by myself and Christina Robbins and we're going to really need your help.  We'd like to hold a kick-off meeting sometime in mid-November to get the ball rolling before we head into the holiday/Polar Bear season and things grind somewhat to a halt.  That way we will have gotten the groundwork taken care of and it will just be a matter of picking things up on January 2nd and running with them.  We'll locate the meeting so it is geographically central to those who are interested in participating in the committee and let you know a place and time once we've got a few volunteers on board.

Now, you may say, "I've been to the auction and I've seen all the wonderful things they do, and there is no way I can help pull anything like that off!"  Now, allow me to say," if I can be a positive part of something like this, anyone can be a positive part of something like this!"  We've got a system to make things turn out right and all we need are people to fill those roles.  We've made mistakes over the years, though most folks don't even notice them.  And, what's more important, we've learned from those mistakes, and the auction has gotten "bigger and better."

As you all know, this auction is the most important night of our calendar year.  It's the reason we have a wonderful haul trailer, a ¾ ton van to pull the trailer, and why sometime next month we'll be closing on a 10 acre parcel of property where we'll build our permanent shelter.  It's a big deal!

So, please, if you have any interest in taking part in this wonderful event, contact Christina Robbins at (219)730-1356 or email her at [email protected] .  We'd love to have you help us make the auction BIGGER and BETTER!

If there is a fun community activity in your area that's greyhound friendly or showcases one of American Greyhound's fantastic supporters, I would love to tell everyone about it! Email, text, or call me about it and I would love to try to feature it in my monthly column-Around Town with Your Hounds!  By the way, the event doesn't just have to be in the Valparaiso area either-the schmoopies and I LOVE a good road trip-especially if there's good coffee involved!
