DVOMB On the Road Board Meeting - September 8, 2017

The DVOMB is going on the road to the western slope to host the September meeting in beautiful Gunnison, Colorado. Please mark your calendars and join us for this event. What is it all about? Please see the details below.

 

What is the Annual DVOMB On-the-Road Board Meeting?

This meeting is part of the DVOMB's annual meeting on the road which is held in a different location around the state. This gives the Board the chance to connect with and hear from community stakeholders who may be unable to attend the regular monthly meetings in Denver. In previous years, the DVOMB has visited Steamboat Springs, Fort Collins, and Pueblo. These have been a great opportunities to share successes and challenges that exist in our field.

When is the meeting?

This meeting falls after the Labor Day weekend on September 8^th, 2017. We will plan to start at 9:00AM and adjourn the meeting around 2:00PM in order to give more time for travel. We are still working the details of this meeting, but we plan to send the finalized agenda by August 25^th.

Where exactly in Gunnison are we meeting?

We are holding our meeting at the Quality Inn in their conference room on-site.

What do you need to do?

Please save the date on your calendar and if you are interested in attending, please contact us at your earliest convenience. If you are unsure if it will be worthwhile, we can tell you that other jurisdictions have benefited from these type of events and learned a lot through the process. We want to make sure that you have an opportunity to share your experiences with the Board and also allow for you to receive new updates in policies and revisions to the Standards.

Expiration of Training Hours for Applications and Renewals

 

Effective August 1^st, 2017, the DVOMB will no longer accept certificates for training credit that are older than five years from the date the training was conducted. This is a conventional practice by many other organizations and stresses the importance of regularly attending training events to stay current with research and best-practices. The implementation of this for new applications will be managed on a case by case basis until December 31^st, 2017.

 

DVOMB Provider Renewals

Thank you to everyone who has submitted their renewal. We have received 188 renewal packets and the DVOMB staff is diligently working to process all of the renewals. Please feel free to contact us if you are wondering about the status, but please note we are working to review each one expeditiously, yet thoroughly. We thank you all for your understanding and patience.   

DVOMB Staff Go to the Sex Offender Management Board Conference

 

Last month the DVOMB staff presented at the 11^th Annual Sex Offender Management Board (SOMB) Conference in Breckenridge, Colorado. Mental health professionals, probation officers, law enforcement, victim advocates, and case managers attend this conference to learn more about emerging best-practices, interventions, and supervision strategies. The DVOMB staff presented on new research regarding the intersection between domestic violence and sexual abuse. The index offense often does not represent what underlying issues are present with an offender. This training focused on how offender evaluations should and need to comprehensively seek to identify issues of intimate partner sexual violence so that treatment can properly address those issues.

Did you know?

 

It wasn't until 1993 that marital rape became a crime in all 50 states. Some state criminal codes still afford exemptions to this law however. According to the National Violence Against Women Survey (2007), among all female sexual assault victims, 20.2 percent were raped by a spouse or ex-spouse, and 4.3 percent were raped by a current or former cohabiting partner. Among all male victims, 4.1 percent were raped by a spouse or ex-spouse, and 3.7 percent were raped by a current or former cohabiting partner.

Description:  This introductory training will provide an overview of the Domestic Violence Offender Management Board (DVOMB) including its role, functions, and the Standards of practice for offender services. The history, impact, and need for a coordinated community response model is presented by looking at the research and case studies regarding domestic violence dynamics and interventions. Using group-based discussions and videos, this training will outline the important aspects to the DVOMB Standards and Guidelines. This includes the philosophy of offender treatment as it relates to victim and community safety, the Multi-Disciplinary Treatment Teams, and an introduction to assessing risk using the Domestic Violence Offender Risk and Needs Assessment (DVRNA). Participants will become more knowledgeable about the evidence-based practices of the Risk, Need, Responsivity (RNR) Principles and how the Standards prescribe a differential treatment model. Finally, this training will offer a brief overview of the application requirements to become listed with the DVOMB and the grievance process.   Trainers: DVOMB Staff   Training Hours Certificate: 7 Hours

Description:    The Community Roundtable Discussion (CRD) is an event hosted by the DVOMB that are conducted around the state. The purpose of CRDs is to improve collaboration, engagement, and the exchange of feedback between the board and communities statewide in a safe and constructive manner. This event is for treatment providers, supervision officers, treatment victim advocates and other interested professionals to come together and start a dialogue about challenges, opportunities and ways to work together. During the afternoon of this training, additions sessions will be offered on specialized topics. Description:    This training will provide an in-depth review of domestic violence offender treatment with a focus on the requirements of the Standards and best practice modalities and concepts. After a discussion of the differences between traditional psychotherapy and forensic offense specific therapy, this training will cover offender treatment within the context of primary and adjunct interventions, offender contracts, level of offender treatment, core competencies and ways to measure offender progress and discharge criteria. Additionally, this training will incorporate important clinical issues to consider and the importance of the Treatment Victim Advocate throughout the therapeutic process. This forum will provide a deeper understanding of service planning for the criminal justice client by attending to risk, criminogenic need, and responsivity issues.  By the end of the presentation participants will appreciate the importance of risk assessment as part of behavioral health treatment and case management services. They will be familiar with the basics of the Risk, Needs, Responsivity factors as well as how to incorporate the findings of risk assessments and criminogenic factors in to service planning and delivery.
