May afo news

Don Stastny to be named
afo Honored Citizen

We hope you read our announcement last week that afo’s 2017 Honored Citizen will be Donald J. Stastny, nationally recognized for his elevation of Design, and Design Methodology as a “problem solving tool.” Don’s approach has its foundation in the academic, political and social cultures of Portland and Oregon. We cannot imagine a better representative of afo’s mission to share design’s role in shaping our future.

Mark your calendar for Wednesday, October 18, 2017, when friends and colleagues will gather at Oregon Convention Center to celebrate Donald J. Stastny, Citizen and Provocateur. Join us as we pay tribute to Don as afo’s 2017 Honored Citizen. Video stories and live presentations will bring some of Don’s many stories to life and highlight his contributions to our designed and built environment.

afo president Rod Ashley, FAIA; 2017 Hatfield Scholar Willy Chandler; Congresswoman Suzanne Bonamici; Antoinette Hatfield; 2003 Hatfield Scholar Nate McCoy

Congratulations, Willy!

The Oregon Zoo’s brand new Education Center was the site of a celebratory luncheon on April 12 as Congresswoman Suzanne Bonamici presented the 2017 Senator Mark O. Hatfield Architectural Award to this year’s scholar, Willy Chandler, who will receive his Master’s Degree from Portland State University’s School of Architecture next month.

The afo Scholarship Committee was inspired, not only by Willy’s design work and academic record, but particularly by his commitment to community service. From his application essay, “…of all the technical, artistic, and theoretical skills developed over the past two-plus years, these moments of human interaction are my greatest takeaway. As a result, I believe that this is the most important knowledge I could possibly offer to the profession I’m about to enter: don’t offer soup and walk away - grab a bowl, pull up a chair, and listen.

Sponsors, Opsis Architecture, Catena Consulting Engineers, KPFF, PAE and Metro made it possible for afo to resume the Hatfield Scholarship Luncheon this year. And the following contributors provided gifts in excess of $3,000 toward the scholarship fund:

Member Profile –
Scott I Edwards Architecture

Abandoned, donated or buildings that have been pieced together over time are often the beginning of Scott | Edwards Architecture’s work with nonprofit organizations. Spaces not designed with the current tenants in mind. Limited resources to update them. Services that are growing as fast as the communities around them. The folks at S|EA think all of this makes for unique, challenging and rewarding architecture. In addition to their private, commercial and civic work in many markets, S|EA has designed for more than 60 nonprofit organizations over the years.

Working with non-profit organizations, they say, is in their DNA, and really encapsulates the S|EA spirit, ‘People First. Design Forward.’

afo is pleased to have the good folks at Scott | Edwards among our corporate members, and we are grateful for their many contributions of time, treasure, talent and good beer for many of our events!
