Parsha Miketz
Joseph in Egypt
1. Pharaoh's dreams disturbed him: in one, there were 7 lean and 7 fat cows and the lean ones devoured the fat; in the other, 7 thin stalks of grain devoured 7 sturdy ones. The butler suggested that Pharaoh send for Joseph. Joseph interpreted the dreams: there would be 7 years of plenty and 7 of famine; he suggested that some of the produce in the good years be set aside for use during the lean years; he was appointed to oversee this task, became the most powerful man in Egypt, married an Egyptian wife and had 2 sons - Manasseh and Ephraim. As predicted, there was famine and Joseph, now the governor of the land, sold the stored grain.
2. Jacob, hearing that there was grain in Egypt, sent 10 of his sons to buy some, keeping Benjamin the youngest, behind. When his brothers met Joseph, they did not recognize him but he did them; he accused them of being spies. They spoke of their aged father and youngest brother. Joseph asked that the latter be brought to him to prove their credentials as honest traders, held Simeon as a hostage and sent the brothers back with grain and their money.
3. Jacob refused to let Benjamin go but when the grain was consumed, he had no choice and agreed.   Joseph became very emotional when he saw Benjamin with his brothers; wined and dined them, sent them off with more grain but he put a silver cup in Benjamin's bag. He had his servants empty the bags and when the cup was found, threatened them, and insisted that Benjamin remain with him while the others could leave.

WHAT MATTERS CONVERSATION
SAT JAN 7 DURING SERVICES

Rabbi Marc Margolius will speak Shabbat morning, Jan 7, on "What Matters:  Caring Conversations About End of Life," a program in which WES is participating to promote facilitated, Jewish values-based conversations about wishes for the end of life.

"What Matters" ( whatmattersny.org) is based at the JCC, funded by Plaza Memorial Chapel, and has engaged with several synagogues and communal organizations in New York City over the past 18 months. It is based on an evidence-based Advance Care Planning program that was developed at Gundersen Health Center in LaCrosse, Wisconsin in order to fill the gap between the legal documentation of advance directives, such as power of attorney for health care, and the emotional and spiritual reality of what it means to make decisions for a loved on...

The program is not about preparing for death.  It's about creating a structure where each of us can reflect on and articulate our goals and wishes and then communicate them to those who will represent us when we are unable to speak for ourselves
