3x2 Cross Country Relay 2017

Team Mustang SS!

Running DRC's 2017 Back to School Relay this year was so exciting for my family! After becoming more serious about running two years ago, my boys, ages 8 and 10, were running confidently enough to be able to be on my team for the race! Aldous, my 8 year old, had recently trained to run a 10k, and while he didn't get to run because his race was canceled, his overall running had greatly improved. William, my 10 year old, had trained for and run a half marathon in the spring. Both trained with DRC!

On the day of the race, we arrived early to pick up our timing device (which took mere seconds) and to go over, again, how the relay works. Aldous was going to run first, then I would run, with William running the final leg. I've run this course what seems like a million times, and knew how long it might take me. The boys had only run it a few times, but were familiar enough with course, if not how to run a relay.
Aldous had named our team Mustang SS, because he really likes cars. What a name to live up to!

A few minutes before start time, Aldous took his place among the other first leg runners. I was struck by how confident he was, not intimidated by the adult runners at all, or by unfamiliar race format. He smiled and took off as the race started! In my head, I had decided on a time he would be back, but he was at the finish line nearly 5 minutes before I expected: red faced and smiling! Wow, what an improvement in time! I took off for my leg after taking the timing device. I noticed how slippery the damp grass was in my road running shoes! About 100 yards into my race, I was overtaken by high school cross country runners going out for their third leg! So fast!

The course was what I expected, and I knew where the hills were. At the top of the biggest hill, there was a water stop, with amazing people passing out damp towels! I didn't need a drink but I sure took one of those towels! How refreshing! After a quick cool down of my neck and face, I threw the towel away, and continued on, knowing the rest was downhill. I came in around the time I expected (I'm nothing, if not consistent!), and passed the timing device off to William. Now, having seen the time Aldous managed in the first loop, I expected William to be a minute or two faster. Heck no! He was 3 minutes faster than his brother! I was so surprised to see him flying down that hill to the finish! Because of his and his brother's blazing fast times, we finished about 8 minutes faster than I had expected! We were triumphant!! Hurray!

DRC had arranged for a snow cone truck to be at the race, and that was a fantastic treat: perfect after a very hot and fast run! I really appreciate DRC for hosting such family friendly events and training programs. It was another successful and fun race.
