President's Message
Collaboration Is Key
Greetings!
The practice of veterinary rehabilitation is one in which collaboration is key. Working together with open lines of communication is critical for successful patient outcomes. Our training is varied and may be from veterinary and/or human medicine backgrounds. Therefore, our approach to addressing similar patient issues may not always be the same, as we may see things in a different light. This is what makes rehabilitation such a great field. We are very fortunate in being able to work side by side with colleagues with such diverse training on a daily basis. There is much to learn from each other and the better the dialogue is between us, rehabilitation practitioners, the more the field will grow.
A great opportunity to network with colleagues will be at next year's Rehab Summit. The
10th International Symposium on Veterinary Rehabilitation and Physical Therapy
will be held July 30-August 3, 2018 in Knoxville, Tennessee. The AARV and the American College of Veterinary Sports Medicine and Rehabilitation will be hosting pre-symposium lecture tracks prior to the start of the meeting. Although is it about a year away, please mark your calendars as it will be a fantastic meeting and one not to miss!

Grant Proposal Submissions Due September 1
We invite all AARV members to submit their grant proposals to AARV before September 1, 2017.
AARV has established a competitive annual awards program to add to the evidence base for veterinary rehabilitation by providing grant funds to highly meritorious applications. We encourage individuals to submit grant proposals that advance the science of canine and/or equine rehabilitation.
The AARV will offer two grants in 2017, one sponsored by AARV and the other sponsored by
Dr. Buzby's Toe Grips. Each grant is worth $2,500 and will be granted to an AARV member to perform research related to the field of animal rehabilitation. The Toe Grips Research Grant is reserved for research related to their product. Applications must be submitted by September 1, 2017 and should follow the format described below. Applications will be reviewed by the Board of Directors and announcement of the awards will be made on October 15, 2017.
Applicants must be AARV members.

SPOTLIGHT PRACTICE
Canine Rehab of New York
Canine Rehab of New York is located on the Upper West Side in New York City. In 2013, Dr. Bonnie Brown purchased a class IV laser for her veterinary practice, Gotham Veterinary Center. The benefits of laser therapy were clear, but Dr. Brown felt that there must be more to offer ailing dogs in addition to rest, anti-inflammatory medications, and laser therapy. She reached out to the laser manufacturer and was introduced to the world of canine rehabilitation and decided to get her certification.
Dr. Brown, the owner of Canine Rehab of New York, and Carly Arbitman, a licensed veterinary technician and Dr. Brown's assistant, both completed the Canine Rehab Certification Program at the University of Tennessee. They both attend rehab conferences, working with leaders in the field to build on their knowledge base. Because of Dr. Brown's passion for canine rehab and what it can do for patients, she opened her own canine rehabilitation facility in November 2015.

Interested in Conducting Clinical Research?
Are you interested in conducting clinical research but don't know where to start?
The entire process from concept to publication is covered during the 10-week course. You will view online lectures, read assignments, and participate in an online live discussion with Dr. Zink each week. You will develop a research hypothesis that matches your interests and clinical caseloads, and then design, carry out and analyze the data for a pilot study. This course is RACE approved by the AAVSB for 15 credit hours.
There are students from the first course that are now collaborating on studies and have been awarded research grants.

Veterinary Practice Acts -
Tennessee and Texas

Happy Summer! Tennessee and Texas are the next states on the list.
Tennessee
View veterinary practice act
Tennessee's practice act is specific in its definitions. Within the definitions, laser therapy and ultrasound therapy is defined. It also includes other integrative therapies by definition, but does not include rehabilitation. However, there is a section in the practice act that does include rehabilitation:
(2) In addition to the specific methods, therapies, and procedures named in T.C.A. § 63-12- 103(10) the practice of veterinary medicine includes, but is not limited to, the following: acupuncture, chiropractic therapy, laser therapy, massage therapy, veterinary rehabilitative therapy, and ultrasound.
This section defines animal rehabilitation as veterinary medicine.
Texas
Texas has a practice act that is long and very specific in parts. There is a section about "Non-Veterinarians" in the rules:
RULE §573.10 Supervision of Non-Veterinarians (a) With appropriate supervision and after establishing a veterinarian-client-patient relationship, a veterinarian may delegate veterinary care and treatment duties to non-veterinarian employees, or to the following independent contractors: (1) licensed equine dental providers, in accordance with §573.19 of this title (relating to Dentistry); or (2) individuals performing any form of musculoskeletal manipulation, including but not limited to animal chiropractic, in accordance with §573.14 of this title (relating to Alternate Therapies--Chiropractic and Other Forms of Musculoskeletal Manipulation).

There are also sections after this about alternative therapies, but no specific mention of animal rehabilitation. It could be interpreted that the section on Chiropractic and MSM (musculoskeletal manipulation) might be inclusive of rehabilitation, but it is very vague.

TECHNICIAN CORNER
Case Study: Long-Term Care for Fibrocartilaginous Embolism in a Labrador Retriever

Zeus, a seven-year-old, male neutered Labrador Retriever presented for recheck after the initial onset of Fibrocartilaginous Embolism (FCE) in February 2016. Physical assessment determined a right-sided T13-L1 FCE. The veterinary hospital was in the early stages of developing a rehabilitation department, which limited modalities available to the patient. To provide the patient with therapeutic services, creativity and resourcefulness was implemented. A goal was set to facilitate Zeus using the right pelvic limb functionally, go for walks, have control of elimination and be happy. When Zeus first started rehabilitation on day two of being hospitalized, he had to be muzzled which helped with relaxation and trusting the therapists.
