PINE CAR DERBY
Good Samaritan Episcopal Church on Union Avenue in San Jose is holding its second annual PINE CAR DERBY.
September 23, 2017
Registration begins July 16 and ends August 7. All ages welcome.
Car kits are $5 each.

Dear St. Stephen's Family,
Great News! The vestry met for a special vestry meeting last night, August 10, 2017, to interview a candidate for our Interim Pastor. The vestry unanimously voted to approve Rev. Ernie Boyer as our new Interim Pastor. He will begin the first of September. He will be 3/4 time, which means that he will work in the office 3 days a week, 8:00 am - 1:00 pm and every Sunday (30 hours). This will still give him time to do pastoral care and work on his sermon each week. Welcome Ernie!
This Sunday, August 13, 2017, is the 10th Sunday after Pentecost. The Rev. Ernie Boyer will preside over the 8:00 am and 10:00 am services. If you have not been at church when Ernie supplied, you will want to be there. This Sunday will be the 3rd time Ernie has supplied for us in the last 2 months. You will be able to meet our new Interim Rector (begins September) and will be able to hear his wonderful sermon. His sermons connect with our daily lives and his passion and presence are inspiring.
Reminders:
The vestry will have their monthly meeting next week on August 17, 2017 at 7:00 pm at St. Stephen's church.
The
Golf Tournament is coming on August 28, 2017. Please mark your calendars and get your registration to Tom Good or put it in the offering plate during one of the services.
The
Golf Tournament baskets for the raffle are due August 20, 2017. It was extended one week to give people more time to put baskets together.
Bishop Mary is leading a Transition Retreat for us on Sept. 15 (Friday Evening) and Sept. 16, 2017 at St. Stephen's Church. More details to come.
Please remember to bring in dry food for the
Food Basket for St. Julie's and change for the
Food for the Poor Jar.
Please look at the
Angels' Board to see if there are any tasks that need to be added or tasks that you want to volunteer for. We need your help to keep St. Stephen's running smoothly.
Remember Andy Lief is putting together a list of tasks that need to be done for the
Beautification of St. Stephen's Project. Please let him know if you see a task that needs to be added.
The
Bell Choir will resume practices on Wednesday, August 30, 2017 at St. Stephen's Church. If you are interested in joining the Bell Choir, please contact Logan Zintsmaster.
Please keep the vestry, Ernie Boyer, and the Rector Search Committee in your prayers. The vestry is working hard to keep St. Stephen's operating smoothly. Ernie Boyer will work hard to help our congregation get through our transition smoothly and prepare us for calling our new permanent Rector. The Rector Search Committee continues to work hard to create our church profile. Please pray that God will guide us all and that we will have open hearts and minds as we make decisions for the church during this transition.

Community Wine Basket
This is the LAST Sunday to bring contents for the Community Wine Basket to church. All baskets will be on display on Sunday, August 20.
If you have something to contribute to the wine basket but cannot bring it on Sunday, please let Edy Unthank know and arrangements can be made to get the contents into the basket.

UPCOMING BIBLE STUDY
The next Bible Study series is a Kerygma course on
The Parables --
Stories for Life in God's World.
Edy Unthank will lead the seven-week class on
Tuesday mornings at 9:30 am beginning September 12 through October 24.
Cost of the class is $20/person to cover cost of materials. Scholarships are available upon request.
If there is enough interest for an evening session of this course, we will determine the best evening based on interest and recruit a leader.
Please let Edy know if you are interested in attending the morning course or an evening course, so she knows how many copies to purchase.

PREPARING THE PARISH HALL FOR OPENING DAY OF PRESCHOOL 
In past years, we have hired a cleaning service to do a deep cleaning of the parish hall before the opening day of preschool. The cost of the service has increased this year, so we are opting to do it ourselves and save $700.
Last week we scrubbed the preschool chairs, deep cleaned both restrooms, cleaned the back patio and play yard toys, and cleared cobwebs from the window sills and blinds. (See Angels' List for Thank Yous.)
I will be at church again on Monday,
August 14 at 10:00 am
to clean the kitchen and scrub the linoleum floor.
Please let me know if you can help..... Bring a bucket, cloths, scrub brush, mop -- whatever cleaning tools you have. We can do this !!

Thank you to the following "Angels of St. Steph
en's" who took care of
an Angel List item this week:
- Dottie Chin for delivering a full car load of donated clothing and other items to Santa Maria Urban Ministry this week.
- Our "Property Angels" Dot Remson and Wanda Bryan for keeping the area under the Oak Tree cleared of leaves and twigs (Dot) and clearing the grass from around the rose bushes by the Bell Tower (Wanda). Labors of love...
- Everyone who helped move furniture off of the Parish Hall carpeting last Sunday and put it back on Thursday evening (Vestry). The Parish Hall carpet is clean and fresh for our start of school.
New to the list:

- Trimming the suckers off of the tree in front of the church by the parking lot. (See Andy Lief or Tom Good)

- Raking the bark mulch in the play yard to cover some of the bare spots before the children arrive for preschool

- Become the congregation's Health & Wellness Ambassador. Send cards and make wellness check phone calls on behalf of the congregation to members who are home bound, recovering from surgery, or ill. Recruit a co-ambassador or a team of ambassadors. (See Dottie Chin)

 COMMITTEE
Dear Lord, Heavenly Father, we, the people of St. Stephen's ask for your blessings on the members of the Search Committee. Bless them in their meetings, in their deliberations and in their discernment. Keep their hearts and minds open to the Holy Spirit and to wherever You will lead them in this process.
Guide them in their deliberations while they prepare the St. Stephen's Profile which will be posted to the National Office of Transitional Ministry (OTM). Please allow this process to be completed with ease and joy.
We trust you and we know that you will bring us the best possible Rector for St. Stephen's as you have done for us before. Thank you, Heavenly Father for all your blessings on the Search Committee and this congregation.
