Growing Food Justice!

Last month St. Anthony Park Community Council staff visited the Frogtown Farm and spoke with Executive Director Eartha Borer Bell. We learned about their community programming, building hoop houses and indoor kitchens on site, and their plans for the future. We shared about our partnerships delivering weekly produce from the St. Anthony Park Community Garden to our neighbors at Seal Hi-Rise who experience food insecurity. We look forward to building more relationships with other food producers in St. Paul to strengthen our local food systems and food access to build community health!

A great time to visit Frogtown Farm will be its annual Harvest Festival coming up on October 7 from 11am-2pm. Learn more about Frogtown Farm and the St. Anthony Park Community Garden

Meet the Neighbors: GLBT and ConneQT Host Home Programs of Avenues for Homeless Youth

Avenues for Homeless Youth's  Host Home Programs have found themselves a new home, expanding into University and Raymond next to  RECLAIM earlier this year. Program Managers Rocki and Ryan welcome you like family before you even sit down, a critical character trait for their work creating spaces for youth who may not always feel that sense in the outside world. Along with Rosie and Kelly, their staff is dedicated to youth-determined programming that provides a community-based response to youth homelessness.

There are 6,000 homeless youth in Minnesota on any given night, an estimated 40% of whom identify as LGBTQI. These resilient youth may be couch-surfing, living in shelters, camping, or in unstable family housing when they are matched with a host to provide them with stable housing for a matter of weeks to months through the GLBT and ConneQT Host Home Programs. The programs screen, train and support volunteer hosts who open their home to youth and connect with larger resources for homeless and LGBTQI youth. Other non-LGBTQI-specific Avenues locations also provide supportive services, emergency shelter and transitional housing for hundreds of youth.

Expanding into St. Anthony Park has been a positive experience for this organization, now able to provide gathering space for youth engagement, informational sessions, and host trainings with easy access to public transportation. Movie nights, hang out space, foosball, informal dog therapy, and generous snacks create a sense of community for youth who visit, focusing on building solidarity in what is often a culture of charity. Program staff are eager to meet youth on their own paths and support them in leadership and advocacy for their communities as organizers. Together through the many challenges in the experiences of homelessness, the Host Home team "always lean towards hope."

Avenues is always looking for new hosts to join their programs! Learn more about our neighbors at Avenues for Homeless Youth and  find information about becoming a host, or other ways to get involved at their website: avenuesforyouth.org/host-home-programs

We need your feedback on the future of SAPCC!

Do you live, work, pray, play, or attend school in St. Anthony Park? We want your input! As our neighborhood plans for the upcoming decade, we want to hear from you on topics ranging from transportation to land use to environment. We hope you will take some time to help us shape the future of our community!

The 10-year planning survey is an important opportunity for community members to share your experiences and ideas of what you'd like to see in St. Anthony Park! By gathering feedback from all the diverse voices in our community we will be able to advocate for and prioritize what our community wants as we guide development in our neighborhood over the next 10 years.

We have received over 300 responses since the survey was released in mid-July. This survey will remain open into September to inform committee planning and priorities. Drafts of SAPCC's next 10-year plans are projected for release and public feedback sessions in November. Look for additional ways to provide feedback with volunteers over the next couple months.  Email any other thoughts, concerns, or questions to  info@sapcc.org .

Please help us share this survey to your neighbors and friends in St. Anthony Park. You can forward this newsletter, refer people to our website, or share this link: tinyurl.com/SAPCC12. Thank you for your ideas and support making St. Anthony Park a strong and sustainable community!

Thanks and farewell to our summer intern

SAPCC was fortunate to host Arleigh Truesdale as our 2017 summer intern. Through the St. Olaf Social Entrepreneurship Scholars program, Arleigh supported our work in community outreach and building relationships with community organizations, shared her experiences with other scholars at the Wilder Center in August. She visited neighbors at Seal Hi-Rise with our partner Lydia Place to listen to their experiences and talk about ways SAPCC can continue to support all members of our community. An environmental studies and sociology major, she was inspired by our Food Justice program to continue to learn more about building healthy food systems with diverse communities.

Thank you Arleigh for all your hard work this summer! We wish you luck in your last years of college and future endeavors!
