Nominations for Washington Education Association Representative Assembly Are Still Open!

This year's representative assembly will be held in Spokane.  The dates are April 13-15th.  Please keep in mind this is the last three days of our Spring Break.

The Rep Assembly is a great way to participate in directing and setting goals for the work of the WEA.  We will elect a 30 member delegation to send to Spokane.  KEA will provide transportation, meals, and hotel accommodations.  If you have never attended an assembly, please consider running for a representative position.  It's a great way to meet fellow union members and a short-term commitment for being involved!

If you are interested or would like to nominate somebody, please contact Christie Padilla

Nominations close on January 6, 2017 at 4:00

Could You Use $3,000 for the Holidays?
We recently discovered that the District has made a serious payroll mistake, a mistake worth millions of dollars. Since 2013-14, no KEA member has been paid for the three
pre-service days worked in August.

In November, we brought this underpayment to the attention of the leaders in the District who responded by saying:  "It is important to note that the number of TRI days increased significantly from the final year of the 11-13 contract to the first year of the 13-16 contract, specifically Deemed Done days (the days for which the District maintains pre-service days are included)..."

In other words, the District is arguing that the three August days, where you set up your classrooms, attended District-wide pep rallies, and sat through two full days of principal/ District directed time, are included in your teacher-directed deemed  done time!

Obviously, KEA disagrees, and has filed a grievance to recover your money.

Here's how the numbers break down:
  • 3 pre-service days that haven't been paid over 4 years = 12 days of lost pay per member.
  • 2 days of principal/District- directed time over 4 years = 60 unpaid hours of meetings and PD per member.
  • 1 day of classroom set-up over 4 years = 30 unpaid hours
  • Suppose your daily per diem rate is $250. Since 2013-14, you have not been paid for $3000 worth of work. Remember this number varies based on your daily per diem rate, it could be less or it could be more.
  • The cost of paying all 1850 KEA certified members $3000 for these days = $5,550,000.
We will keep all KEA members updated on this important grievance, and we remain committed to advocating for you.

Statewide Student Bill of Rights Rally in Olympia on January 16th
Join hundreds of KEA and WEA members from around the state, along with parents, students, and community members on the steps of the Washington State Capitol Building in Olympia in support of amply-funded public education.

The event will run from 9:30 am to 12:30 pm on Monday, January 16, 2017.

If you carpool with at least one other member, KEA will reimburse mileage to the driver. In addition, KEA will reimburse your lunch expense (with original receipt) up to a maximum of $15 per person, including tip.

Keeping the Union Strong
Over the winter break, don't be surprised if you receive more email or even direct mail or phone calls from the Freedom Foundation or Choice for Teachers, an extreme anti-union, anti-public school group trying to convince you to drop membership in KEA and WEA. Remember that the Freedom Foundation isn't advocating for you at the District office, in court, at the bargaining table, or in Olympia. The Freedom Foundation isn't filing grievances to recover your lost pay. They aren't lobbying legislators to fully fund public schools. KEA and WEA-your unions-are doing that and we are stronger together.
