Governor Baker Announces Mass Digital Health Council

On Tuesday, November 22nd, the Baker-Polito Administration announced the creation of a Digital Healthcare Council that will advise the administration on the future of the Commonwealth's digital healthcare industry.

The Council will develop a three-year growth plan to confirm Massachusetts as the leading global digital health ecosystem. It is co-chaired by Katie Stebbins, Assistant Secretary of Innovation, Technology, and Entrepreneurship at the Executive Office of Housing and Economic Development, and Dr. Jeffrey Leiden, Chairman, President and CEO of Boston-based Vertex. MeHI Director Laurance Stuntz serves as a member of the Council and MeHI will provide management support. The Mass Digital Health Council builds on momentum of the Mass Digital Health Initiative launched by Governor Baker in January 2016.

"For Massachusetts to become a national leader in digital health, we need to continue to build on the momentum our Digital Health Initiative has already produced," said Governor Charlie Baker . "This council will collaborate to move past barriers in the healthcare industry and solve significant challenges to make advances in patient care, lower health care costs, and address public health crises, like the opioid epidemic."

Israeli and Massachusetts Partnership on
Digital Health and Cybersecurity

During Governor Charlie Baker's recent Economic Development Mission to Israel, digital health and cybersecurity were front and center. The mission included the signing of a memorandum of understanding (MOU), between the Massachusetts Technology Collaborative and Israel's CyberSpark, a non-profit private organization focused on the promotion of the unique cybersecurity ecosystem in and around Be'er-Sheva, Israel. The MOU, signed by MassTech CEO Tim Connelly and CyberSpark CEO Roni Zehavi focuses on potential key areas for collaboration including research projects focused on healthcare technology-related cyber issues, designed to build on the cybersecurity and healthcare talent centered in both Massachusetts and Israel. The agreement also calls for technology and policy roundtables, training for cybersecurity students, and visits by delegations from both regions. Full details can be found in the press release announcing the agreement.

One of the business leaders joining Governor Baker in Israel, American Well co-founder Dr. Ido Schoenberg, took part in an interview in which he tackled the question of why, as an Israeli, he decided to set up his telehealth company in Boston. Check out the piece on American Well's website.

He recommends innovators to "be flexible in your ideas, always question your assumptions, and find a partner interested in working with you."
