Board Highlights are timely recaps of School Board meetings. They are emailed to staff, parents, and interested community members before the official minutes are approved and posted.

Links to pertinent memos and presentations from the Board packet are highlighted in green. Board packets are posted the day before regularly scheduled Board meetings.

Regular Meeting

Board President, Kendra Wallace,  called the Meeting to order and thanked the principals for their recent contributions at the Enrollment Balancing Advisory Committee meeting.  She also wished all a peaceful and safe winter break.

Superintendent, Trisha Kocanda,  welcomed all in attendance and provided highlights from District schools, including seasonal service activities. She also acknowledged the many students who have shared their musical talents at winter concerts.

Greg Kurr, Chief Financial Officer,  presented information regarding the 2016 Final Levy. The Levy is a request for property tax income, representing over 90% of the District's annual revenue. While the District gained Board approval for the 2016 Final Levy Request of an increase in the total levy of 5.94%, an anticipated abatement, to be determined at the March 2017 Board Meeting, would significantly reduce the total increase of the final levy to an expected level of approximately 2%.  In addition, the expected abatement would lower the approved increase in the debt service fund levy from 35+% to approximately 2%. View the video below for an explanation of this concept.

Informational Memos

A short-term (Phase I) solution will be implemented in fall 2017 to provide immediate space relief at Crow Island School. The EBP Board Advisory Committee is considering the following 4 models as it works to create a recommendation to the School Board in January.

  2. Some Crow Island Kindergarten Students Attend Another District School
  3. All Crow Island 4th Graders Attend Skokie School
  4. All Students Remain at Crow Island (A Second Temporary Unit is Installed)
The District is in the midst of hosting staff and community Input Sessions to gain feedback on the four models under consideration. A final community Input Session will be held on January 5, 2017, from 7:00 p.m.-9:00 p.m. at Carleton Washburne School.

The District recommended that the Board adopt a resolution to issue up to $11 Million in bonds to permit the refinancing of certain outstanding bonds at a lower interest rate. The Board adopted the resolution later in the meeting.
