Market News

August is typically a slow time for economic news. At the national level, the headlines have been about the continued strong hiring picture, which drove unemployment down to 4.3%, and the 2.6 growth in GDP during the second quarter. The latter is likely to be revised (upward if history is a clue) but is not expected to push beyond the range of 2% to 2.8%.

The regional market remains more upbeat than the overall economy. Designers continue to be busy. The trend towards newer offices is accelerating (read more in the fall DevelopingPittsburgh) and a handful of users are in the market looking for 60,000 sq. ft. and up. Several of these companies are searching in the CBD and its fringes because their suburban locations are making it harder to recruit workers.

Project News

While the massive concrete pour is underway at the Shell polyethylene facility (the cracker) in Monaca, a package that includes and administration building and medical/fire station facility totaling about 84,000 square feet is out-to-bid to Fay/Alberici, Mascaro/PJ Dick and Turner, due Aug. 18. A lab building was also just released to bid Sept. 14. Check BuildingPittsburgh for an update on the Shell project.

In other project news, Massaro Corp. was selected as the CM for the $26 million AGH Cancer Institute project. IKM was chosen as the architect. Massaro was also awarded the $4 million Mercy Hopsital central sterile suite. H amister Group awarded a contract for its  $12 million Northland Heights senior living facility, which is the conversion of the former LaQuinta motel on McKnight Road. PJ Dick's special projects group started construction on the $3 million Keystone Shooting Center in Marshall Township.
