Colorado Business Roundtable has been honored to host   Business Roundtable  President John Engler on numerous occasions including last year's  "Business, Education Reform and America's Workforce" luncheon with Gov. John Hickenlooper.  Engler announced  on Thursday, December 15 his plans to retire in mid-2017.

"The outlook in early 2017 to achieve passage of major components of the Business Roundtable economic growth agenda is very bright," he said. "Tax reform, regulatory relief and immigration reform are all possible with the new Administration and Congress. I expect the pace to be brisk as everyone gets to work next year."

Energy and Environment
The  Colorado Energy Coalition (CEC), an industry affiliate of the  Metro Denver Economic Development Corporation, released this week its annual study measuring Colorado's competitive position in the oil, natural gas, coal, renewable energy, alternative-fuel vehicles, and sustainability sectors of the energy industry.

The eighth edition of  Resource Rich Colorado (RRC) compares Colorado to the 49 other states based on the availability of natural resources for energy generation, pertinent energy policies and programs, and applicable intellectual resources crucial to the energy industry.

"While many states are typically strong in either fossil fuels or renewables, Colorado has the advantage of rich and abundant resources in both, positioning it as an energy leader not only in the United States, but globally," said Brian Payer, Program Manager for Strategic Operations at Sphera and co-chair of the CEC's Resource Rich Colorado Committee. Western Governors formally approved seven new policy resolutions on the state-federal relationship, states' share of royalties and leasing revenues, water quality, tax-exempt federal lands, and storage and disposal of radioactive waste at the  Western Governors' Association 2016 Winter Meeting .

The inauguration of a new Administration presents an unusual opportunity to realign the state-federal relationship. Western Governors are eager to work in true partnership with the federal government and call upon the Administration to engage them in the development and execution of policy that impacts state authority. Governors and states have knowledge, perspectives and competencies that should be brought to bear in federal decision-making processes.

The resolutions adopted this week by Western Governors are informed by their dedication to the protection of their constitutional prerogatives. WGA Policy Resolution 2017-01 articulates specific policy on the state-federal relationship and suggests a framework for its realignment.   Read more

Did you know?
  • Only 14.6 percent of senior executive positions are held by women.
  • Among senior women executives, 10 percent say they had the aid of four or more executives in helping them advance, compared to their male counterparts at 17 percent.
  • Yet more than half of the senior women acknowledged that it is important to have support from higher-level seniors in order to advance.
  • Women currently own 36 percent of all businesses - a jump of 30 percent from 2007.
Leadership today is no longer just about the results you produce. Your ability to connect with others, how you incorporate perspectives and navigate groups proves just as important. Explore the networking opportunities within your company.   More

By Scott Laband, President/CEO of Colorado Succeeds and originally published in Entrepreneur:  Perhaps you recently watched 10-year-old Jack Bonneau, from Broomfield, Colorado, on ABC-TV's Shark Tank, show pitching his lemonade stand and marketplace business and picking up a $50,000 low-interest loan from billionaire venture capitalist Chris Sacca.

First, kudos all around - to Jack, his parents, his teachers, his mentors and his principal - for all the dedication they invested and the direction they gave him to land this deal and attract the publicity that has followed.

But, here's the big question: Should we be surprised by such prodigious business acumen?  More

As important as technical skills are in employees, employers across industries are finding it difficult to find workers who also have the critical skills of communication, teamwork and critical thinking.  A recent survey of hiring managers revealed that across the U.S. 59% of those managers said that soft skills were "difficult" to find and that the lack of these skills is impacting the productivity of their companies.  Many organizations hire the technical skills but wind up firing for a lack of "soft skills", costing them in both productivity and the cost of replacing those employees.

Sue Kenfield, of See It Thrive™, is offering a unique, experiential opportunity starting in January for employers to help develop what she calls Essential skills in employees who struggle in this area, designed in a way to drive true skill development.
