Sweeny Families,

Sweeny Elementary focuses on operating as an organization that focuses on continuously improving to best meet the needs of our students, families and employees. To do so, it is vital that we collect feedback from you, our stakeholders. In October we distributed a survey to our parents and community in an effort to determine areas of celebration for our building and our district as a whole, and also to identify areas that need improving.

Over the last few weeks we have been examining the results from this survey. Below you will see those aforementioned celebrations and opportunities for improvement (OFI). Also identified are action steps we have created for each opportunity for improvement in an effort to better meet your needs.

In addition to the summarized information below, CLICK HERE to see the full results of the survey.

CELEBRATIONS
Celebration #1: I receive effective and efficient communication from student's school building.
Reflection/notes: This was one of OFIs from last year and we increased our data by .26. We implemented a quarterly grade level newsletter, used PTO as a venue to showcase student leadership and Parent and Community Advisory as an opportunity to share information and gather feedback.

Celebration #2: My student likes attending this school.

Reflection/notes: Through Leader in Me, there is student ownership in learning and multiple opportunities for leadership in the classroom and building each week. We saw a .04 increase in this data.

Celebration #3: Our school has a program that teaches and reinforces student self-discipline and responsibility.

Reflection/notes: Our school has a very intentional focus of Leader in Me in the classroom and building. The students are learning to live the 7 Habits both in their academic and personal worlds.

OPPORTUNITIES FOR IMPROVEMENT (OFI)
OFI #1: My student understands his/her learning goals.

Reflection/notes: Our students are aware of their learning goals.

Action Steps: Our students have Leadership Binders which include individual student goals. Each Leadership Binder will now include a sheet for parents to process through their child's goals and sign off that they have reviewed them.

OFI #2:   I receive sufficient information from my student's teacher(s) to stay informed of his/her progress.

Reflection/notes: We saw a .06 decrease in this data.

Action Steps:  The Sweeny Leadership Team will be meeting to establish norms for classroom newsletters which will include celebrations, pictures and academic data. The Leadership Team will create grade level videos to walk parents through the Leadership Binders so they understand each section.

OFI #3:  I know how well my student is doing in class.

Reflection/notes:  We saw a .30 decrease in this data.

Action Steps:  This year we implemented Leadership Notebooks building wide. We will add an
expectation at each grade level that assessments are placed in the leadership notebooks on a regular basis so families see data associated with power standards beginning second semester.

Thank you to those who took time to provide this vital feedback! If you have questions or concerns, please contact our building office at 732-3670.
