The Aug. 21 solar eclipse begins around 9 a.m. and should reach maximum coverage around 10:17 a.m.
Eclipse: Once-in-a-lifetime event
 
The Long Beach Peninsula will see an impressive 97-percent coverage during the Aug. 21 solar eclipse. Washington's southwestern corner hugs the eclipse's path of totality, meaning the area is primed to be among the best viewing spots in the nation.
This is literally a once-in-a-lifetime event -- the last time a solar eclipse crossed the lower 48 states from coast to coast was 1918.

The eclipse won't be the only reason to look upward on Aug. 21 -- the day marks the beginning of the annual Washington State International Kite Festival in Long Beach.
Kite Festival is set for Aug. 21-27
 
Not to be outdone by the morning eclipse, the 37th annual Washington State International Kite Festival kicks off Aug. 21 for a full week of high-flying fun.

The festival features professional kite-flying competitions, hands-on workshops, activities for children, four mass ascensions, fireworks and lots more!

Pro tip: Look for midweek lodging if you're having trouble finding overnight accommodations.

The annual Rod Run to the End of the World is Sept. 9-10 in Ocean Park.
Coast cruise: Hot rides & cool cars

Two automobile events roll back onto the peninsula in early September: the Slow Drag at the Port of Ilwaco is Sept. 8 and the Rod Run to the End of the World is Sept. 9-10.

The Slow Drag is a light-hearted competition where slow and steady wins the race. The Rod Run is an annual gathering of hundreds of hot rod enthusiasts where you'll see acres of automobiles and eye candy.

First ever Rhythm & Blues Festival

A newcomer to the local event scene, the Peninsula Rhythm & Blues Festival on Sept. 15-16 at Wilson Field in Ocean Park showcases Pacific County's love for music. 
The lineup includes Blind Wolf, Franco Paletta and the Stingers, The Tim Kelly Band and more.
