A Brooklyn Boy Gives His All to Help Those in Need
The Kanfer family was inspired to do what they could
to make life a little sweeter for people who are homeless.
A young boy in Brooklyn decided to donate his allowance to help those in need, and ended up giving clients of CAMBA’s Respite Bed Program something more valuable than money. Ashley Gold Kanfer, the boy's mother, contacted CAMBA after her son told her of his intention to donate his allowance and they were referred her to CAMBA's Respite Bed Program, a program in which people who are homeless stay overnight at various churches or synagogues throughout the city. The members of those congregations, along with other volunteers, cook, eat and sometimes stay overnight with the homeless guests.

Ms. Kanfer's eldest son also chose to donate his allowance and the two boys decided to make their donations directly; one evening, the family visited a site of the Respite Bed Program bearing $2.00, and a plate of delicious homemade cookies. They went around and gave each guest a cookie before dinner, earning them a great deal of positive feedback from the guests of the respite site. The entire family had such a phenomenal time interacting with the guests of the respite site, they plan to return regularly to volunteer with the Respite Bed Program.
