The 1885 Schoolhouse at Tubac Presidio State Historic Park

Preparations for the Smithsonian's Water/Ways exhibition are well under way! While the exhibition does not officially arrive until June 2018, host sites and Arizona Humanities staff are busy prepping for the exhibit and community programs that will explore water stories and water issues.

Thank you to the communities who welcomed us last week! McFarland State Historic Park (Florence), Central Arizona College - Aravaipa Campus (Winkelman), Bullion Plaza Cultural Center and Museum (Miami), Fort Apache and Theodore Roosevelt School National Historic Landmark (Fort Apache), Bisbee Mining & Historical Museum (Bisbee), Henry F. Hauser Museum (Sierra Vista), Amerind Museum (Dragoon), and the Tubac Presidio State Historic Park (Tubac).

	Panel from Mining Uranium Memories exhibit

The Northern Arizona University Sustainable Communities Program was awarded an $8,000 project grant to develop the  Mining Uranium Memories exhibit . Based on oral history interviews and documentary research, the exhibit explores the tangled legacy of uranium mining and use in northern Arizona. It complements Hope and Trauma in a Poisoned Land, a visual arts exhibit organized by the Flagstaff Arts Council. 

Both exhibits open August 15th at the Coconino Center for the Arts (2300 N Fort Valley Rd, Flagstaff, AZ 86001).

Karl Kendall has worked for the Phoenix Public Library for the past 17 years. In his current role as the Deputy Director of Collections and Programming, Karl oversees the coordination of programs, services, and the purchasing of library materials across this diverse system of 17 Library locations. 

Karl shared, "My experience planning and coordinating programming for a large urban public library system has given me many opportunities to share humanities-based programs with the community. More importantly, I have had a lifelong passion for the study of humanities, particularly in the areas of History and Literature. I look forward to helping Arizona Humanities advance its mission!"

Join the Vail Preservation Society and Odyssey Storytelling for a free storytelling workshop.  Celebrating Every Voice will explore ways to share and preserve personal stories, gain new storytelling tools, practice performing in a safe and supportive environment, and more. Participants will also have the opportunity to learn oral history collection methods and connect with the storytelling community.

Explore The House is a Heart: Why Historic Homes Matter on August 24th

We are excited to host Stuart Graff, President and CEO of the Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation, at Arizona Humanities on August 24th for a special presentation on historic homes. Graff will discuss the role that historic homes and other historic structures play in our community, using the Ellis-Shackelford House (Phoenix) and Taliesin West (Scottsdale) as examples of how understanding these places-and preserving them-tells us not only our history, but also our future. Like first-person histories, historic homes give a human dimension to the great forces that shape communities.  This program is in conjunction with the 100 year celebration of the Ellis-Shackelford House (1917-2017).
