CVPA Painters take on the Floyd Plein Air Festival

Rolling hills, abundant farms, and sunlit moments on the Blue Ridge Parkways will give inspiration to two Radford University College of Visual and Performing Arts painters during the Floyd Plein Air Festival. Ken Smith, associate professor of art, and Karen Sewell, Department of Theatre administrative assistant, are among the 25 artists juried into the Aug. 14-19, 2017 festival in Floyd, Virginia.

Partnered with the Floyd Center for the Arts, this event grew out of a successful Plein Air weekend held in 2016. It is now a weeklong event where the artists will spend time outside, painting and drawing the landscape as they physically experience and view it.

MFA students featured in Artful Lawyer Gallery

The work of Radford University graduate students Leslie King and Lam Dinh is currently featured in Blacksburg’s Artful Lawyer Gallery.

Dinh, who is pursuing a Master of Fine Arts (MFA), says a lot of his inspiration comes from Vietnamese culture and his father’s printmaking work.

“Many of my woodblock prints are based on my youthful memories of Vietnam,” Dinh said. “They encompass folk tales, customs, practices and cultural festivals that are very dear and close to Vietnamese people.”

Past design chair and professor Betty Jo Tilley, 87, of Claytor Lake/Radford, VA died July 19, 2017

Betty Jo (BJ) earned her Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Home Economics at West Virginia University. She taught at WVU and at McLain’s Business College in Bluefield, WV. In 1958, she came to Radford University as Assistant Professor of Home Management in the Department of Home Economics. Ms. Tilley expanded a single class in house planning into a comprehensive interior design curriculum, offering a B.S. degree. She had a special expertise in color theory and kitchen design. She became an expert in lighting design and was instrumental in the development and installation of the Hubbell Lighting Lab in McGuffey Hall. She retired as Associate professor and the Chairperson of the Department of Interior Design in 1996 and worked without pay the following year to ensure consistency in the curriculum delivery. It was her efforts that led to the Department’s FIDER accreditation (now CIDA) in 2006.

“I loved being in her classes. She was a wealth of knowledge and she cared about her students. My fondest memory was when she had us out to her lake house to see her classic furniture pieces and an end of year party. What a great legacy for Radford University Interior Design” ~Tara Tumelty Price, RU class of 1998.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Harold and BerNeice Rodeheaver. Survivors include the love of her life, her husband of 51 years, Thomas L. Tilley (Tom); daughter and her husband Lisa Lee and David McCarthy of Buford, SC; brother and his wife Jerry and Susan Rodeheaver of Florida; sister-in-law Mary Ward and her husband Dick Haislip; six nephews, two nieces and their spouses; and many friends and former students.

She was a wife, mother, teacher, humanitarian, leader, visionary, a lake lover, a long-time member of Snowville Christian Church, an avid bridge player and golfer, a highly respected faculty member, supporter of the arts and a sports fan.

Students, faculty, friends and neighbors are invited to attend a celebration of Betty Jo Tilley that will be held at 1:30 p.m., Friday, August 18, 2017, at the Mullins Funeral Home in Radford.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in BJ’s memory to Interior Design, Radford University Foundation, P.O. Box 6967, Radford, VA 24141.
