Seminar on Finding Joy Continues
Edward Dufresne+ will continue the discussion on the topic, "Finding Joy"
at 9am August 13th, and the fourth and final session will be on September 10th, both following the 10am worship service.
The main text for discussion is
The Book of Joy by the Dalai Lama and Archbishop Desmond Tutu, (Avery, New York, 2016). Topics include: What Is Joy?, Joy and Suffering, Joy Comes with Perspective and Acceptance, Joy in Humility and Humor, The Joy in Forgiveness, Joy and Gratitude, Joy and Generosity, Joy and Compassion, Joy in Being One with the World, and Joy in Being One with God.
For the upcoming discussion August 13th, please read pp229-240 - Joy and Forgiveness; pp251-262 - Joy and Compassion; pp263-276 - Joy and Generosity.

Spiritual Encounters at Life's End
"Spiritual Encounters at Life's End" - a talk by author Chaplain Joan Maxwell - will draw on her work as a palliative care hospital chaplain as described in her recently published memoir Soul Support. The talk will include true (anonymized) stories of dying patients' spiritual experiences and some information about ways to support dying loved ones.
The talk will be held Thursday, August 17th at 5pm at St. Brendan's, free of charge (offerings will be accepted).
Copies of the book are available on Amazon and at the Periwinkle in Deer Isle and Blue Hill Books.

Women's Wilderness Trip
Join in for the adventure -- A few spaces are available on the St. Brendan's Women's Wilderness Trip for September 11-14, 2017 to the beautiful Katahdin Lakes Wilderness Camps.
Plans are underway and details to those who are signed up will be sent out a few weeks before the trip. KLWC provides accommodations (group cabins)
with bedding, great food, boats & equipment & a fabulous setting for $444.00/person (half due as deposit). The trail walk in is about 3 miles.
A small sea plane is available to fly 2 people in (for $85/each way). Last year some of us were fortunate and saw a black bear on the walk out. The location is inside Baxter State Park on a gorgeous lake.

Scripture Notes for The Tenth Sunday After Pentecost
In today's liturgy, water is a major symbol. The Gospel reading
from Matthew is the account of Peter's attempt to join Christ in walking on the Sea of Galilee.
As Peter's faith fails and he begins to sink below the waters, he cries to the Lord for help and
Jesus rescues him.
Today we move ahead in the story of God's ancient people to the sons of Jacob (now called
Israel). The older sons, jealous of Joseph
-
who is their father's
favorite
-
sold him into slavery
in Egypt, telling their father a lion killed him. Their intention was to get rid of Joseph; God used
their action, though, to save the family, as we will see in a few weeks, and ultimately to lead the
descendants
of all twelve brothers into freedom from Egypt in the Exodus.
We also continue to read the Epistle to the Romans. In this part of Romans,
Paul is dealing with
his sorrow that many of his fellow Jews have not accepted Jesus as Christ but he does not believe
that God has rejected them. All who turn
to God in faith belong to God and there is no
distinction, for
all are one in Christ who have called on the name of the Lord.
Water in the scriptures is not only a symbol of life, but also a symbol of death.
As Israel passed
from death into new life at the Red Sea, so we gather as a community that has passed with Jesus
from death into resurrection in the waters of baptism.

In Our Prayers
We pray for those on our prayer list suffering and recovering from illnesses,
especially Jan Place, William, Pat Stoneburner, Holly, Carolyn Angel, Colin MacNaught, Shannon Cormier, Nancy Stearns, Daniel Harriman, Diane, John, Tom, Claudia, Kathy Gray, Hannah Scaife, Marcia Scott, Bob Harris, Sen. John McCain, Ann Ottesen, Jennifer Hulsey and her family Byron, Ben, and Clair. We pray, also, for those who love and care for them.
We pray for those struggling with addiction and mental illness.
We pray for all those receiving care through Neighbor Care and for all the residents of the Island Nursing Home, the Northern Bay Residential Facility,
and their families.
We pray for the dying, and those who have died. We remember also those who mourn.
We pray for the victims of gun violence-in our cities and towns, in our schools, in our places of worship, and in our homes.
We pray for the victims of the violence of armed conflicts around the world. We pray for those made refugees by the violence of armed conflicts. We pray for the victims of terrorist attacks everywhere.
We pray for all who suffer the effects of domestic violence and the violence
of bullying in our schools.
We pray for all peacemakers, and all those who work for justice.
We pray for all those serving in the armed forces of our country,
remembering, especially, Craig, Chris, and Graham.
We pray for all who govern, and we pray for the concerns of our local community, remembering, especially, our children, our young people, and
our isolated elderly.
We pray for Justin, Archbishop of Canterbury; Suheil, Bishop of Jerusalem; Michael, our Presiding Bishop; Steve, our Bishop; for the members of our vestry; and for all our members, whose ministries are varied and far-reaching.
In the Diocesan Cycle of Prayer, we pray for
the summer chapel congregations of Church of the Redeemer, Sorrento and St. Christopher by the Sea, Winter Harbor.
In the Anglican Cycle of Prayer, we pray for
Remo - (Lagos, Nigeria)
On the Island and Peninsula,
we pray for
Eggemoggin Reach Society of Friends, Sargentville.
