Farm Bill Listening Session Hosted by US Lawmakers Draws Large Crowd in Modesto
About 250 people attended a farm bill listening session last weekend in Modesto, with dozens of growers and other stakeholders providing comments about farm bill priorities - including specialty crops and trade. The session was led by House Agriculture Committee Chairman Mike Conaway (R-Texas), who was joined by U.S. Reps. Jeff Denham (R-Turlock), Doug LaMalfa (R-Richvale), David Valadao (R-Hanford) and Dwight Evans (D-Pa).
Those who were not able to attend or speak at the session may submit comments about the farm bill to [email protected]. Archived audio of the listening session - including opening remarks and attendee comments - is available via link below.
In related news... U.S. Rep. Jimmy Panetta (D-Carmel) hosted an agriculture roundtable discussion this morning in Salinas to hear from local growers about their farm bill priorities. He was joined by fellow House Ag Committee members Jim Costa (D-Fresno) and Collin Peterson (D-Minn.).

California Legislature's Wine Committees to Convene for Hearing on Wine Industry Issues
The Senate Select Committee on California's Wine Industry and Assembly Select Committee on Wine will host a hearing next week to
hear from a panel of industry experts on sustainability, fish friendly farming practices and farmworker housing. Panelists will include representatives of the wine industry, local government, nonprofits and sustainability organizations.

GOOD NEWS FOR PD/GWSS BOARD RESEARCH
Earlier this year, CAWG led an agricultural coalition effort to assure that costs for grower-paid research at the University of California would be limited to the actual cost of the research. This would not include charges for indirect costs that were proposed by UC to be as much as 40 percent of the contract amount. At the time, UC decided there would be no indirect costs charges through July 2018. UC indicated it would be coming out with a "white paper" on the issue to deal with the issue in the long term.
In CAWG's ongoing conversations with UC, it now seems clear that UC agrees with CAWG and is pursuing a long-term policy of charging no indirect cost charges on grower paid research. This would apply to all commodity boards including the Pierce's Disease/Glassy-winged Sharpshooter Board.
UC is likely to adopt this formally in the next few months and we will keep you apprised as things progress.

Winegrapes are No. 6 Crop in Solano County
Solano County winegrapes rose in rank and value in 2016. The crop value was $19.5 million, up from $15 million in 2015. Two of the county regions, Suisun and Green Valley, are recognized AVAs. Statistics for dark varieties were 11,300 tons and $10.3 million value in 2016, compared to 7,660 tons and $7.7 million value in 2015. Statistics for white varieties were 12,500 tons and $9.2 million in 2016, up from 10,270 tons and $7.2 million in 2015.

New Approach to Restock California's Groundwater Via Orchards, Vineyards
Scientists at Berkeley Lab's
Earth & Environmental Sciences Area (EESA) are collaborating with farmers, industry organizations and UC Davis to test on-farm banking to manage groundwater more sustainably. They say it's an improvement on the age-old method of groundwater recharge, the process of replenishing aquifers by infiltrating water from the surface into shallow aquifers. This past April, EESA scientist Craig Ulrich spoke to winegrape growers about groundwater recharge and on-farm banking at grower tailgate events organized by San Joaquin Valley Winegrowers Association

UC Researcher Working on Virtual Vineyards for Growers
From Western Farm Press:
Ali Pourreza, a UC Cooperative Extension agricultural engineer,
is working to develop a much more affordable way of combining aerial digital images - taken by a drone - with computer technology that would allow growers to create a virtual three-dimensional reconstruction of a vineyard. It also offers the promise of allowing growers to assess conditions throughout the vineyard without the time and expense of walking up and down each row.
