Dear Classics Eagles Families:

Winter is here!  What a great time to get some rest, to change the pace and continue to grow the game.  The latest indoor training schedules are on the web site and can be accessed HERE.  In addition, below you will find a great article from Jason Griffiths, Senior Director, about his observations of a recent trip to observe and assist with coaching our U18 Red Girls Team at their US Youth Soccer National League event.

You can also find opportunities for the whole family at SuperKick, and check out their 10 Year Celebration Event on January 3rd.

It is also a good time to reflect on the year's accomplishments.  We have included information we have received from parents on Classics Eagles high school aged players who have won team, league, district or other awards this fall.  If we missed anyone, please send information to [email protected].

Have a great weekend!   For both the latest news and past newsletters, please don't forget to the check out the Classics Eagles web site HERE , and The Back of the Net archives HERE

The Classics Eagles Leadership Team
Jason Griffiths Shares Insights: "Travel, Togetherness & Technique"

Jason Griffiths recently traveled with Glen Tourville and the U18 Girls Red team to their US Youth Soccer National League event.  We thought it would be helpful to share Jason's insights about and to the team following the tournament.

Those three T's are what stood out to me on my recent trip with the U18 Girls Red team to North Carolina to participate in National League. Glen Tourville coaches the team and asked me to come and assist him at the event.

Travel: 11 hours there, 11 hours back, one hour to and from the field each day, and not a single complaint from any player. Bus rides can be miserable depending on the make up of the people on the bus, especially when the TVs are not working on a long trip like ours. The girls outdid all expectations I had of them. I knew they were great kids, but they took it upon themselves to talk, study and entertain themselves the whole time. They showed a maturity and camaraderie that made the trip enjoyable.

Togetherness: We played 4 games in 4 days at the event. The girls were playing in front of college coaches and against very good opposition. The event was set up very nicely. Great fields, facilities and very professional. In every game we played we went a goal behind. We finished the four games with a record of won 1, lost 1 and tied 2. When you are losing in a tough environment, it is easy to throw in the towel and give up. These girls did the opposite. When the chips were down, and odds were against them, they showed passion, desire, grit and determination to fight and claw their way back into the games and finished every game as the stronger team. You find out about a player not in their strongest moment or when things are easy, but in their weakest moment, when things are going bad. We found out the these girls can play good soccer, can overcome adversity, and do it together as a team, not as individuals. I am reading a book right now called Players First by John Calipari (University of Kentucky's Men's Basketball Coach). He talks a lot about "Servant Leadership" in the book. A servant leader is someone who is a Servant, Steward and Shepherd:

  • As Servants, life is not always about you, but those who you serve with and for (your teammates, coaches, parents and club)
  • As Stewards, you don't own anything on the field, you need to earn the right to play, to be respected, to win. You need to work at your trade to improve!
  • As Shepherds, everyone on the team is important, starter, non-starter, whether you play one minute or 90. Everyone has a key role to play. Don't complain about the time you don't get, be grateful and make the most of the time you do get. This is a team and as a servant leader you must give everything you have to it.
Technique: In our four games, it was clear that we tried to play the best soccer out of anyone we played. We valued the ball and our technique, although not perfect, it was better than the teams we played against. Our goals were of high quality, our passing was crisp, and our intent was purposeful. Whether we won every game or lost every game, the girls got better with every game. That is a testament to their hard work and Glen's approach to coaching.  The Target Competencies Model that Glen has led for the entire club is working and these girls are proof of that!
Congratulations!

Staying In Shape: Maintaining Your Fitness Level During The Holidays

Like in any sport, soccer athletes go through three unique phases during the course of a year; preparation (preseason), competition (in-season) and recovery (offseason). While physical and mental rest are key components of the offseason, it is important that athletes do not lose fitness or "de-train" during this period of rest.

According to Active.com, muscle cells begin to return to their pre-training form after only 10-14 days of inactivity. If athletes go more than a month without enough physical activity, they also risk starting from scratch from a cardiovascular fitness standpoint as well.

So what is the minimum amount of physical activity that athletes must do to maintain their fitness level during the offseason?

  • Training Frequency  (number of days per week) can be reduced by 1/3 or 2/3 as long as the training intensity and duration stay the same
  • Training Duration (length of work out) can be shortened by 1/3 or 2/3 as long as the frequency and intensity of training stay the same
  • Training Intensity ( amount of physical effort ) can be lessened by 1/3 or 2/3 if the training frequency and duration stay the same

Stick to these guidelines and you will have a much easier time transitioning from offseason to preseason!
