Russell's Ritings,
A couple weeks back I concluded a sermon with an anonymous poem. After worship two people asked for copies, and I can't remember who. Let me just share it again with all our folks. It's worth hearing twice. It's titled, "THE NEED OF YOUR CHURCH."
More tithes and fewer drives.
More action and less faction.
More workers and fewer shirkers.
More backers and fewer slackers.
More love for the Word and less love for the world.
More holiness of life and less bickering and strife.
More fasting and praying and less feasting and playing.
Amen.
Sunday was a marvelous day. On the way home from the ranch Diane remarked that in all the churches we have served, and out of all the church picnics we have attended, this one was the best. The setting, the music, the fun things for the kiddos, the food, the weather, the views, the mood, the spirit, the planning, the fellowship - everything was about as good as it comes! THANKS!
This next Sunday we continue with the David stories. Sunday's sermon is, "God is Where We See Him", and the text is II Samuel 7: 1 - 17. And I know all our children are SO excited school is starting! Sunday we will conduct our annual "Blessing of the Backpacks". If you are a student - all grades through a Ph. D. program, - a teacher, a bus driver, an administrator, a cafeteria worker - anyone connected with a school, please bring your backpack and come for the blessing!

Have you ever wanted to know more about your church? Come and join Pastor Russell for four Sundays as he leads us through Methodism 101.
September 17 - "The History of Methodism"
From the Wesley's until today we will look at how the Methodist movement has become one of the most prominent church families.
September 24 - "The Beliefs of a United Methodist"
Someone has said Methodism is the common denominator of the denominations. Wesley said, "If your heart is as my heart is, give me your hand for we are brothers." We will look at the diversity of belief systems within our church and also at the core beliefs we do not compromise.
October 1 - "The Organization of the United Methodist Church"
How are we organized? What is our structure? What is "holy conferencing"? How do Bishops, Superintendents, and pastors "connect"? What is the "connectional" system? How does UMCE fit within the connection?
October 8 - "A Look at UMCE"
What makes our own local church so special? Where have we come from, where are we, and where are we going?
October 15, 22, 29 - "How To Grow A Church" (led by Pastor Russell)
During these weeks we will look at the principles of church growth, the keys to church growth, the costs of church growth, and strategies which will help UMCE become the church God wants it to become.

We will be blessing the new school year and all who participate in it on August 13 during the 10:30 service. Anyone enrolling in school is invited to bring their backpack for this special blessing. Whether you are entering kindergarten, are an experienced middle school student, or are college-bound, you are invited to participate. Also teachers, college professors, school lunch workers, bus drivers, principals, and anyone else employed in education is in invited to come forward for special prayer that day.
