Gardant Spotlights Shining Stars
Shining Stars from the more than 40 senior living, assisted living and memory care communities that Gardant manages received special recognition at the company's annual Holiday Awards ceremony. Our Shining Stars are employees who exemplify our philosophy of placing residents first and our values of providing residents with the love, compassion and dignity they deserve. They work each day to enhance the quality of life for residents.
 
Amanda Elliott from Cambridge of Swansea was honored with the First Place 2016 Shining Star award. Ann Matravers from Heritage Woods of Batavia received the Second Place award, and Rosa Salazar from Heritage Woods of Bolingbrook was recognized with the Third Place award.


Social Engagement and Mental Sharpness
A large study conducted in the United Kingdom adds further evidence to the premise that social engagement is good for our minds, says a report posted earlier this month on the
Medical News Today website.
 
The study found that being part of a community group could help prevent cognitive decline associated with aging.

Eagle Ridge Mannequin Challenge
Residents and staff from Eagle Ridge of Decatur joined the Mannequin Challenge phenomenon. A Facebook video of their challenge has been viewed more than 13,000 times.

Aspirin and Heart Disease
Another report posted earlier this month on the Medical News Today website cites research about aspirin and heart disease.
 
The study by researchers at the University of Southern California indicates that daily intake of low-dose aspirin among individuals at risk of heart disease could reduce the risk of a heart attack. It may also reduce the risk of cancer and help individuals live longer.
 
Making Her Final Day Special
A 102-year-old resident of Heritage Woods of Freeport was honored with a Centenarian Award by the Affordable Assisted Living Coalition just hours before passing away.

 
No Chance It's Coincidence
John Evans Supportive Living in Pekin, Illinois was honored with Gardant's 2016 Making a Difference Award for having the highest scores in two key categories on its Resident Satisfaction Survey. The two categories are how satisfied are you with the community and would you refer the community to others. The community also was recognized for having the highest average occupancy rate in 2016. Average occupancy topped 99.9%.
 
Blood Pressure Meds and Bone Fractures
New data suggests that blood pressure medications might help reduce the risk of bone fractures among older adults, says a HealthDay report posted on the Medline Plus website.
 
Enriching Lives of Residents
Three Gardant communities were honored for enriching the lives of residents by going above and beyond in providing the Love, Compassion and Dignity that residents deserve. They were John Evans in Pekin, Prairie Living in Carbondale and Heritage Woods of DeKalb.  

 
"Elder Orphans" and Planning for Aging
Many Baby Boomers are realizing that they will have no family to depend on as they age, notes Teresa Mears in a Blog posted on the U.S. News and World Report MONEY website. She stresses the need for "Elder Orphans" to plan ahead.
 
Best of Senior Living
Eagle Ridge of Decatur, Heritage Woods of Batavia and Heritage Woods of Huntley have been awarded "Best of Senior Living" awards from SeniorAdvisor.com.
 
Recognized for "Giving Back"
Heritage Woods of Dwight, John Evans of Pekin, and Cambridge of Maryville received 2016 Giving Back awards for residents and staff going above and beyond to volunteer and give back to their local communities.

 
Financial Scams Targeting Seniors
It's sad to note that financial scams targeting older adults have become so common that they now are considered the "Crime of the 21st Century." The National Council on Aging has information available on the "Top 10 Financial Scams Targeting Seniors."
 
Sales Centers Open
Temporary Sales Offices have opened for three communities slated to open for occupancy in the first half of 2017. The communities are Heritage Woods of Minooka, The Lodge at Manito and Silver Birch of Hammond in Indiana.
 
Winter Weather and Older Adults
Older adults are among those especially vulnerable to cold temperatures. A recent Gardant blog featured tips to help older adults cope with winter weather.
