Dear Friends of Shoals Marine Laboratory,
Happy holidays and New Year! I cannot believe our 50th Anniversary is coming to an end! It has been an inspiring and wonderful year for SML, and we are thrilled to see how the SML community has been strengthened and nourished by our anniversary celebrations. We look forward to continuing to build these relationships in the coming year!
In 2017, we have big plans to develop and enhance several SML programs and initiatives: the much-anticipated SML Alumni & Friends Association, a strategic plan to help chart SML's future, the return of the popular SML Reunion Weekend, new undergraduate education and research opportunities, a Scientist-in-Residence Fellowship, fun and innovative Adult & Family Programs, SML student research symposium, and more. Many of these new programs are detailed below. We hope you will make summer plans to visit Appledore Island in 2017! You won't want to miss it.
We also have exciting news to share about our $250,000 SML Fund goal for 2016. We are overjoyed to announce that we expect to reach our goal by the end of the year! Thank you, thank you to each and every one of our supporters. We hope you feel a deep sense of pride and accomplishment this holiday season knowing that SML students, interns, researchers, and operations will benefit from your generosity in the coming year. Cornell Chronicle features SML

SML is a feature story in this month's Cornell Chronicle, highlighting the ways in which SML inspires the next generation of scientists through hands-on learning and transformative field experiences.
Vanessa Constant (SML '11, Cornell '14), currently a PhD student at Oregon State University, described SML's influence on her academic path: "I think fondly of my time on the island and warmly reflect on the profound influence it had on me as a young scientist. SML helped position me to be an engaged student, proactive researcher and dynamic communicator." Well said, Vanessa! Thank you!

SML is hiring an Associate Director

Join our team! The SML Associate Director position will be a full-time, year-round, non-tenure track academic appointment within the
University of New Hampshire's
School of Marine Science and Ocean Engineering. The Associate Director will report to and work closely with the SML Executive Director to oversee SML activities and all aspects of
SML's
mission and academic programs.

Announcing the Shoals Semester!
|
|
|
Our newest program for undergraduates!
The Shoals Semester Program offers a full semester's worth of credits during one summer at SML - freeing students to participate in research internships or take advantage of other opportunities during the regular academic year. Shoals Semester students will take at least four SML courses, one course at a time, with the added benefit of not having to juggle competing assignments for overlapping courses. Because this program replaces a regular academic semester, students can apply their federal financial aid to their Shoals Semester courses.
With so many potential combinations of four SML courses in a row, Shoals Semester students can design a summer program to match their interests or fulfill requirements in their major.

Shoals SIRF is rolling over Appledore
|
|
|
We are excited to announce the launch of Shoals Scientist-in-Residence Fellowships (Shoals SIRF) for 2017. Applications are now being accepted, and we will select two early-career research scientists to join us on Appledore Island this summer. Shoals SIRF will support marine research at SML while also providing opportunities for SML undergraduate interns to learn from and work with the fellows. This program is made possible by the generous support of one of our donors, Dr. Peter Stifel. Thank you, Peter!

ML Internships: A Particularly "Fulfilling" Experience for One UNH Student
When UNH Zoology major, Mary Caffrey ('17) landed the
Environmental Education Internship for summer 2016, she got right to work investigating how to get the most out of this excellent opportunity. Mary worked with SML's UNH-based Academic Coordinator and faculty member, Gregg Moore, to link this competitive internship into her academic requirements. In addition to being a great experience, the internship also fulfilled her UNH Capstone requirement. Capstones are independent projects initiated by students to help them build career and life skills that translate directly into employment opportunities.
"My internship was really the first step in the right direction in terms of figuring out what I wanted to do after college," Mary said, adding "I'm ready to get out of the classroom and into the field!"
All of SML's internships and the majority of our undergraduate courses can fulfill the UNH Capstone requirement. Moreover, Mary's experience demonstrates how well-aligned SML opportunities are with enriching undergraduate education
and directly preparing students for exciting challenges ahead.

In Closing
Getting the word out to potential Shoals students is a challenging task. Led by the academic program staff, all of us in SML's year-round office take part in student recruitment efforts each year - but it is a big job. Would you like to help us? We would welcome your help! How? Post SML flyers at your local college/university. Spread the word to college counselors at a nearby high school. SML's high school classes come with Cornell University credit, making them a smart move for motivated college-bound high schoolers. Are you a Shoals alum? Arrange to speak to undergrads or high school biology students about your SML experience. Maybe you have some other novel ideas for helping us spread the word!
