Colloquium Series

The 2016-2017 Alberti Center Colloquium Series continued, on November 22, with a presentation by Dr. Catherine Cook-Cottone titled
Trauma Informed Mindfulness and Yoga in the Schools: Tools for Prevention, Growth, and Healing.
The next colloquium in the series will be a panel of local Dignity Act Coordinators and will take place on Tuesday, February 7, 2017 from 11:30 a.m. to 12:45 p.m.
This event is FREE! Registration will open in January.

GSE Department adopts-a-family
for the holidays
|
The Graduate School of Education (GSE) helped to bring a happy  holiday to one local family this year as part of the "Adopt-a-Family" program, sponsored by the UB Office of Community Relations. The GSE's generosity was very much appreciated by this family of twelve! The gifts were presented to the family at a breakfast held on the South Campus Wednesday, December 21. Thank you to everyone who participated this year!

BAND Against Bullying is a local high-school performing arts competition with a theme of dignity and respect. This will be the fifth year the ev
ent is being held, and the Alberti Center is proud to be co-sponsoring once again, along with M&T Bank, the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children and Hodgson Russ.
For the first time ever, BAND will take place in downtown Buffalo at the 710 Main Street Theatre, adjacent to Shea's. The date of the event will be Thursday, April 27, 2017. More information is availabl

On Saturday, October 1, Queen of Heaven School in West Seneca sponsored a 5k called "Run, Walk and Roll Against Bullying." For the second year in a row, the school very generously donated a portion of the proceeds from this event to the UB Alberti Center for Bullying Abuse Prevention. Dr. Katy Allen accepted the check in the amount of $641.20 on behalf of the Center when she was invited out to the school on Wednesday, December 14. The Alberti Center team would like to express our sincere gratitude to everyone involved in the planning and success of this event!

"Spread the Word to End the Word" event planned for this spring
|
Spread the Word to End the Word (STW) Day will take place on Wednesday, March 1, 2017, across the country. STW is a national campaign to encourage people to stop using the word "retard" due to its hurtful and dehumanizing historical context. This year the STW committee of WNY (representatives from a variety of organizations including the Alberti Center), is planning an all-day event to support this initiative. Between 10am-2pm, information tables will be up at several local coffee shops offering customers the opportunity to sign a pledge to stop using the r-word. Representatives from the planning committee along with self-advocates will be present to answer questions and provide information. There will also be an assembly taking place in the morning at City Honors High School. In the evening, volunteers will help out at the "Friends of the Night" by distributing warm food and blankets to individuals in need.
