SENIORS SERVICE AWARDS

The Minister's Seniors Service Awards recognize Albertans who improve the lives of seniors through their volunteer service. This year, 48 individuals and 12 organizations are nominated for the 2017 Minister's Seniors Service Awards. There are an additional 24 nominees for the inaugural Alice Modin Award which honours a senior who has contributed long-term service to their community. View the complete list of nominees.

All nominees will be recognized at community celebrations to be held across Alberta during the summer. The Edmonton celebration will be held:

From all the nominees, the Minister of Seniors and Housing will select up to eight award recipients to be honoured at a ceremony in the fall of 2017.
ALBERTA HUMAN RIGHTS ACT AGE AMENDMENTS

The Government of Alberta is asking for input on proposed changes to the Act respecting age discrimination. Your perspectives and ideas will help inform changes made.

They are seeking specific input on whether the Act should include provisions to allow:
  • programs and activities that provide a protection or benefit to minors and seniors, and if so how should "seniors" be defined (relevant to section 4)?
  • seniors-only housing, and if so what should be the relevant age restriction (relevant to sections 4 and 5)?
They also seeking input about if there are unintended consequences to the addition of "age" to sections 4 and 5 that should be taken into account.

They have created a guide to help participants focus their thoughts and responses.

WISE 50 OVER 50 AWARD

Canadians over 50 are the fastest growing segment of the business start-up population. What better time than Canada's 150th to recognize and celebrate the accomplishments of people who are harnessing the power of experience to make an idea or a long-held dream a reality?

The awards are open to all Canadian resident entrepreneurs who have started a business after they turned 50 years old. Entrepreneurs must be majority owners of the business and the head office of the business must be located in Canada. Apply or nominate someone for the inaugural WISE 50 Over 50 Awards by August 31.

Jewish Family Services' program Edmonton Healing Centre for Grief and Loss is once again offering its group series this fall. 

Roads to Healing is an introductory 2-hour session where grief, self-care, and coping strategies are explored. For those wanting to pursue group counselling, there is the 7-week Navigating the Rivers of Grief series. Finding Meaning, Finding Me is a level two, 7-session, group series for those who have completed a Navigating the Rivers Series and are wanting to continue to explore their grief journey and healing.

Part-time mature receptionists are required for the Edmonton office to ensure that people living with Parkinson's disease and their families feel welcomed and supported at first contact with our association.

This position may require 1-2 people willing to commit 4-20 hours per week beginning September 1, 2017. Days of the week would be Tuesday and Thursdays from 8:15 a.m. - 5 p.m. Days may be split into shorter shifts.
