Happy New Year! With warmest wishes for a joyful 2017, we look forward to welcoming you to the Museum for the kick-off of an exciting year of exhibitions and programming. We open with two new student-curated projects addressing art from post-World War II Japan: Perspectives from Postwar Hiroshima: Chuzo Tamotzu, Children's Drawings, and the Art of Resolution , curated by Michael Amano '17 and Virginia Crow '18, and an installation showcasing "creative prints," also known as sōsaku-hanga , developed by students from Alison J. Miller's course, "Japanese Print Culture." In the month ahead we celebrate an exciting new acquisition that sheds light on the historic presidential inauguration of  Abraham Lincoln in 1861. Late in the month, as we welcome returning students, we hope you will join us for a Winter Open House and a discussion about iconoclasm, as we explore the symbolic power of the fine arts. See you at the Museum!

Perspectives from Postwar Hiroshima: Chuzo Tamotzu, Children's Drawings, and the Art of Resolution

Opening January 10, 2017

This exhibition features drawings created in the early 1950s by Japanese school children living in Hiroshima. The drawings were created as part of an art exchange with students in Santa Fe, New Mexico, which was organized by the Japanese-American artist Chuzo Tamotzu as a means of fostering reconciliation between Japan and the United States in the wake of World War II.

Acquisition of Rare Photograph of Abraham Lincoln's First Inaugural

The Museum of Art is proud to announce the acquisition of a rare vintage photograph of Abraham Lincoln's First Inaugural. Acquired at auction in October and attributed to the Scottish-American photographer Alexander Gardner (1821-1882), it shows a large crowd gathered outside the east side of the U.S. Capitol on March 4, 1861 to attend Lincoln's swearing-in. The Museum will unveil this photograph for the first time at a special program on Thursday, January 12th. Frank Goodyear, co-director, and Patrick Rael, professor of history, will speak then about the image and its subject.

Student Choice: Emma Hamilton '17

The Joined Great Chair is one of the most fascinating works in the decorative arts collection here at the Museum. The chair, which is almost 350 years old, is an exceptional example of seventeenth-century colonial American furniture and possesses a complex history and an intimate connection to the College. The chair arrived at Bowdoin in 1872 as a gift of alumnus Ephraim Wilder Farley. Immediately cherished for its elaborate details, the chair was used for important ceremonies, including as the President's chair during commencement exercises.
Japanese Print Show Collaboration

During the past semester, students from Alison J. Miller's course, "Japanese Print Culture," had the opportunity to curate an exhibition about postwar "creative prints," also known as sōsaku-hanga. Students engaged in close-looking sessions with works drawn from the Museum's collection of historic and modern Japanese prints in the Zuckert seminar room, and were intrigued to observe transformations in print techniques and materials over time.
