Come just to listen or to dance to the blue grass and old time musicians who play every  Tuesday and Saturday beginning at 7pm. Admission  is $5 on Tuesday and $6 on Saturday. Line Dancing classes are also offered on Monday nights beginning at 6pm. The Jubilee is located on North Main Street, across from the Courthouse.

Local blue grass and old time musicians jam each Monday, 2 blocks north of the Courthouse at the Crouse House in Crouse Park, beginning at 6pm. Come and play or just listen. No charge, but a donation is appreciated. 336-372-5473

Barn Quilt Trails 

Barns and other buildings around the county display squares illustrating quilt patterns and add interest to a driving tour of the countryside. Drop by Alleghany Chamber of Commerce and Visitors' Center for a brochure. We are in the rock building with the green awning (58 South Main Street, Sparta). Our foyer is always open and a brochure is always available.

Driving Loops
Brochures for three driving loops of the Alleghany country-side are available at the Alleghany Chamber of Commerce and Visitors' Center. Each loop is about a leisurely hour's drive and includes information on historic points along the way. The Chamber office is in the rock building with the green awning (58 South Main Street, Sparta). Our foyer is always open and a brochure is always available.
Be sure to visit when planning a trip this Spring or Summer. Open Thursday through Saturday, 10am to 5pm. There's never an admission charge. Stop by to experience local history and to see the new displays, 7 North Main Street, Sparta.

Veterans' Morning Coffee & Breakfast
 at the VFW
The VFW hosts an informal full breakfast including, biscuits, gravy, eggs, bacon, sausage, grits, and coffee every Wednesday from 8:30-11am. All veterans are invited to attend.  Click to learn more .
 
The VFW Military Museum is open to the public, 10am-2pm, every Wednesday and Saturday in the basement of the VFW Post 7034, 1193 US Highway 21 S, Sparta, NC. Admission is free.

Watch for Cyclists

Alleghany roads to take care on, 
watching for cyclists , on
Saturday August 12th, the day of the  Blue Ridge Brutal Bike Ride.
 
In Alleghany County, the riders take the following route, approximate times for riders will be between 9.30AM and 1.00PM:
  1. HWY 18 from Blue Ridge Parkway to HWY 113 North.

  2. HWY 113 North to Garvey Road.

  3. Garvey Road between HWY 113 North and HWY 93.

  4. HWY 93 West from Garvey Road to intersection with HWY 113 South.

  5. HWY 113 South to Piney Creek School Road.

  6. Piney Creek School Road, to South Fork Church Road to Kings Creek Road.

  7.  Kings Creek Road from South Fork Church Road to the New River at Kings Creek access.

Demolition Derby & Figure 8 Racing  
Demolition Derby and Figure 8 racing will take place at Alleghany County Fairgrounds. Smash-up race to the last car running, food vendors, activities for kids. Admission is $10 adults, children 12 and under free with adult. This is a fundraiser for Sparta-Alleghany Volunteer Fire Department.

New River State Park Upcoming Activities
Leave it to Beavers- Sat, Aug. 12th - 10:00am @  Wagoner Access
Join a park ranger to learn about natures "dam builders"...the good...the hazards...and their role in the eco-system of our forests and waterways. There will be a short hike to look at beaver signs. Please bring water, and dress for the weather.

Fly Fishing Demo Promo- Saturday, Aug. 12th - 10:00am
Meet at Wagoner Contact Station
Join Tom Kellner, New River State Park Camp Host and Fly Fishing Guru for a casting demonstration. Learn the basic set up and use of a fly rod verses a casting rod. Borrow a rod from the park or bring your own. After learning basics: practice, practice practice and you may land a smallie or red eye bass.  Good luck and have some Fun at the Park.

Aug. 12th - 2:00pm-  Hwy 221 Access Visitor Center
Join a State Ranger at the visitor center off Highway 221 for a 2.4-mile hike to learn more about the trees in the New River State Park. It is recommended to where sturdy shoes, dress for the weather and bring a water bottle.
