PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT

We have been working hard in preparation for another great school year!

MIDDLE SCHOOL SCHEDULE UPDATE

Middle School students are invited to a special event during the Meet & Greet on Tuesday,
August 15 from 1:00pm - 4:00pm. Middle School students will get their schedules at this time. The event will include a "Schedule Scavenger Hunt" (with a prize) and an opportunity to meet Middle School Staff. There will also be a Middle School Only Ice Cream Social in the gym from 3:00pm - 4:00pm. Please come join us! The afternoon will be lots of fun! Students unable to attend the Meet & Greet will be able to pick up their schedule in the school lobby on the first day of school.

Please note, 6th & 7th grade students will not receive a teacher assignment in the mail because they switch classes and have a different specialist teacher for each subject. The letters mailed August 4 were for K - 5th students only. Fifth grade is a transition year with one foot in elementary and the other middle school. Fifth grade students follow an elementary model for academic instruction, which is why fifth grade students received a teacher assignment, even though in other capacities we treat them as Middle School students. We apologize for any confusion this has caused.

EXPRESS CHECK-IN

Each WCA family should have received an email to complete the Express Check-in process.
In order to complete your child's registration for the 2017-2018 school year, you need to log into
Online Express Check-In to verify and/or update emergency contact, medical information, etc., for your child by August 16.

You will need your Douglas County School District Username and Password to log-in to Express Check-In. If you do not know your username, or you need to reset your password, please email Mary Bertke  with your name and your child's name. She will then send you your username, parent ID, and instructions to reset your password if necessary.

CHINESE CULTURAL OPPORTUNITIES

We wanted to pass along a couple of excellent opportunities for the WCA community, especially our Mandarin students, to experience the Chinese culture and language!

The Summer Picnic and Wellness Fair is organized by the OCA (Organization of Chinese Association Denver). VIEW THE FLYER. Our very own Yueling Yu has been invited to perform Tai-Chi at this event!

The 10 Year Anniversary Celebration Series held by the CCD (Community College of Denver) is another great opportunity! VIEW THE FLYER. One of the series is the  September 30 Grand Show held at the King Center Concert Hall in which Yueling Yu will be performing on the stage!

MEET & GREET

We hope you can attend the Meet & Greet on  August 15! Come anytime from 1:00pm - 4:00pm. This is a great way to ease any first day jitters by giving you the opportunity to meet your teacher, see your classroom and drop off school supplies. Vision and hearing screenings will also be held in the gym during this time for grades  K, 1, 2, 3, 5, & 7At the Meet & Greet, your teachers will be handing out color coded cards to be used for carpool (see below for more information.)

Preschool Meet & Greet Schedule. On August 15, the AM classes will meet from 1 - 1:45pm and PM classes will meet from 2-2:45pm in the preschool classroom.

DROP-OFF/PICK-UP PROCEDURES (K - 7th)

The drop-off and pick-up location for K-2nd (and their older siblings) will be on the East side of the building (the East Loop.) The drop-off and pick-up location for 3rd - 7th graders will be along the front of the school (the Front Loop.) You may park in the West Parking Lot, or the Church Parking Lot. Please note that the carpool line is a "No Cell Phone Zone." Thank you for your cooperation!

DROP-OFF
Drop-off begins at 7:45am. Please do not let your student exit your car until you see a carpool attendant. Once you see a carpool attendant outside, your child(ren) may get out of the car themselves, unless they need help exiting the vehicle. For safety reasons, please have your child exit your vehicle from the sidewalk side only. Students may not enter the school building before 7:45am.

PICK-UP
Pick-up begins at 3:30pm. Parents will be given signs, color-coded by grade. Make sure you choose a sign that designates the youngest person in your car. Red: Kindergarten, Yellow: first grade, Blue: second grade, Green: third grade, Purple: fourth grade, Orange: fifth grade, White: 6th/7th grade. Write your last name in bold, black marker and place the sign on your dashboard for pick-up. An adult will call out your last name and your child will walk up to your car to get in.

WHAT HAPPENS IF A PARENT IS LATE FOR PICK-UP?
Parents are expected to arrive promptly for pick-up. At the end of carpool, any remaining students will be brought inside. A phone call will be made to parents. If parents are not reached, emergency contacts listed in Infinite Campus will be called. If emergency contacts are unreachable, school staff will wait 15 minutes before making a second attempt to contact a parent or designated emergency contact. If after the second attempt no responsible party is reachable, law enforcement will be called.

If parents are not reached and/or the child has not been picked up by 4:00pm, Administration will be notified by the student's teacher and the student will be sent to aftercare. Parents will be charged $1.00 per minute after 4:00pm. Due to the school office closing at 4:00pm, parents will need to pick up their child(ren) through the gym door behind the school.

FROM THE DESK OF THE SOCIAL WORKER

Attending school has a huge impact on student success. This year we want to make sure every student misses no more than 9 days of school, or 1 day a month. We need your help!

Did You Know?
  • Many absences, even in Kindergarten, can cause children to fall behind in school.
  • Missing just a day or two every month can make it harder to learn to read by the third grade.
  • Students with too many absences struggle to catch up, even with take-home assignments.
  • All families have hopes and dreams for their children. Being in school every day will enable children to do well in school, and graduate from high school ready for work or college.
What Can You Do?
  • Develop a regular bedtime and morning routine.
  • Help your child lay out clothes and pack backpacks the night before.
  • Make sure your child has the required shots before school starts.
  • Avoid missing school unless a child is truly sick and seek help if chronic illness is a challenge. Check with our school nurse or office staff if you are not sure about when to keep your child at home due to illness.
  • If your child seems anxious about going to school, talk to teachers, school counselors, or other families for advice on how to make her feel comfortable and excited about learning.
  • Reach out to a family member, a neighbor, or another parent if you are having trouble getting your student to school.
  • Arrange medical appointments when school is not in session.
  • Avoid extended vacations when school is in session.
District policy states that when students miss 10% or more of the days enrolled in school they are considered chronically absent. All students, K - 12, who are absent for any reason (e.g., illness, suspension, the need to care for a family member), regardless of whether absences are excused or unexcused are considered chronically absent. After a student misses 10 DAYS , the school begins the truancy process which can result in court action.

If you have any barriers to getting your child to school (i.e. transportation issues, health problems, etc.) please reach out to me, Lindsay Wonstolen, School Social Worker, for support. My goal is to help the students, staff, and families within the WCA community to Be the Best You Can Be.

GIFTED CORNER

In the beginning of September, students in Grades 3 and 6 will take the Cognitive Abilities Test (CogAT 7). The CogAT is an assessment that indicates the level and pattern of cognitive reasoning abilities of a student in comparison to grade and age peers. During this testing period, students in grades one, two, four, and five may be referred for testing to determine areas of strength and possible identification for gifted programming. The referrals for CogAT testing may come from the parent and/or the classroom teacher. If you have questions regarding the referral testing, please contact Kate Parker.
