The MH Companies is pleased to have played an integral role in the Colorado Outward Bound School Year-Round Micro-Cabins
project
. Since 1991, the Department of Architecture's Design Build Program at the University of Colorado Denver has served the broader community by partnering with non-profit organizations on a variety of innovative projects. In 2016, the Colorado Outward Bound School, a not-for-profit organization, worked with 28 students from the CU Denver Colorado Building Workshop. These students designed and built seven insulated cabins for year-round use. They were required to conduct a critical architectural inquiry into materiality, structure, light, context, environment, and program, to create innovative solutions to prefabricated, accelerated-build, micro housing. The MH Companies worked closely with the students
to assist with the lighting design. And, since the program relies almost entirely on donations of building supplies, we reached out to our manufacturers for product donations. Pinnacle Architectural Lighting
and
Bruck Lighting
came through with donations of energy-efficient LED products. Through our involvement with the program, we were able to give the students a practical working knowledge, and deeper understanding of how lighting design and product specification plays an integral role in the success of a project.

Each month, our Lighting Controls Department Manager, Clint Conley, offers insight and advice about lighting controls. Clint, a licensed professional electrical engineer, brings over 15 years of construction, engineering, and lighting controls experience to the table. He takes the often confusing topic of lighting controls, and presents information in a straightforward and concise manner.
This month, Clint is sharing
an article which discusses the importance of defining the sequence of operations of a lighting control system early in the design and specification process.
The end goal of any control system is to maximize energy efficiency, and meet the requirements of energy codes in a way that is simple and seamless for the building occupants to operate. If the ultimate functionality of the system is not defined, the full value of the installed control system may not be realized.
