PRINCIPAL LETTER


Dear WCA School Community,

As 2016 quickly comes to an end, I wanted to give a recap of what we have been up to this month. The December Cougar Essential was Perseverance. Teachers reinforced this concept in the classroom, and it was the focus of our December assembly. Also at this assembly, our second graders presented their turkey poem from the Taste of World Compass event. They did
a great job!

During our extra assembly this week, we recognized all of our band, choir, percussion and strings ensembles with a few select performances. We also had a Box Tops contest reward, so keep collecting those Box Tops!

I wanted to apologize for the confusion on our previous Box Tops celebration with first grade.
I missed some of the key communications between first grade and PTO. Thanks to both groups for their hard work on behalf of our students!

DCSD Interim Superintendent, Erin Kane, visited WCA on Wednesday. It was a privilege to introduce her to some of our amazing students, teachers, and staff as we toured the school. I was very proud to share with her how far we have come!

In January, our Cougar Essential will be Knowledge. We value education and want our students to see the importance of always learning and growing. When we return from winter break, let's all work together to have a great start to 2017!

ANNOUNCEMENTS


WINTER BREAK! The office will be closed December 19 - January 2, 2017 for winter break. We hope you have a wonderful time with family and friends. See you back on Tuesday, January 3!

January Enrichment Clubs. Check out the club opportunities for January! Beginning in January, a signature will be required in order to dismiss your child from the gym. Please note the schedule changes for 1st grade violin, 2nd/3rd grade violin, 3rd - 6th grade strings, and percussion. If your child will be returning to orchestra or joining for the first time, please complete this permission form. If you have any questions, please email Ms. Cox.

Monthly Formal Uniform Calendar . There will be two school assemblies next month on January 5 and January 19. View the Formal Uniform Calendar here. 

PTO Spirit Nights. Spirit Night at Papa Murphy's (62 Founders Parkway only) on January 4, Spirit Night at at Papa Johns on January 10, and Spirit Night at Rink at the Rock on January 26.  SPIRIT WEAR DAY will be on January 10!


A NOTE FROM THE MUSIC TEACHER


Hi Parents,

I am very excited to continue all of the new opportunities in the music program at WCA! Each of the musical ensembles that we offered in the fall will continue after winter break, but please note the start dates and the schedule changes below. Permission slips will be sent home with students the first week back from break. 

The spring musical will be offered for 5th and 6th graders only, but it will depend on how many students show interest. If your child is interested in participating in a musical, please email me over winter break!

Half Day Kindergarten Violin -- 11:30am-12:00pm Mondays & Thursdays (starts January 5)

Full Day Kindergarten  Violin -- 12:05-12:35pm on Mondays & Thursdays ( starts January 5)

1st Grade Violin --  Monday  3:45-4:45pm (starts January 9)

Beginning Band (4-6 Grades) --  Monday  3:45-4:45pm (starts January 9)

Musical Theatre (5-6 Grades) --  Monday  3:45-4:45  (Pending Interest, starts January 9)

Junior Voices Choir (1-2 Grades) --  Tuesday  7:10-7:55am (starts January 10)

Orchestra (3-6 Grades) --  Tuesday  3:45-4:45pm (starts January 3)

Percussion Ensemble (3-6 Grades) --  Tuesday  3:45-4:45pm (starts January 10)

Preschool Violin -- Tuesdays or Wednesdays 11:30-12:30pm (starts January 3)

WCA Choir (3-6 Grades) --  Wednesday  7:10-7:55am (starts January 11)

2nd & 3rd Grade Violin --  Wednesday  3:45-4:15 (starts January 11)

1st Grade Violin --  Thursday  3:45-4:45pm (starts January 5)

Advanced Choir (4-6 Grades) --  Thursday  3:45-4:45pm (starts January 12)

2nd & 3rd Grade Violin --  Friday  3:45-4:15 (starts January 13)

All of the instrumental ensembles will be run through the Explorer's Club after care program and will cost $40 per month. The Junior Voices Choir and the Advanced Choir will be free of charge, and the WCA Choir has a suggested donation of $30 per semester. This will cover the cost of sheet music and hiring an accompanist.
