Dear Saint Rose Families,

It has been a great week at school with many chances to celebrate our anticipation of Christmas. Santa visited preschool, kindergarten and first grade.  Our four year old preschoolers performed a great Christmas program. Today we all enjoyed the elementary Christmas program and tomorrow grades four through eight will provide a musical celebration of the season.
I hope that your family has a wonderful Christmas!

Sincerely,

Dr. Bryon Borgelt
Principal

Counselor's Corner                                   December 2016

This month's lesson focused on the Lifeskill of Courage, which is being brave, especially during difficult and scary situation or times.

Guidance Lesson Recap:

Grade K- As a class, we read the story Can I Come Too? by Brian Patten. The story focused on a group of animals that were looking for an adventure. In the story, the theme focused on the fact that even the smallest animal can be brave and show courage. As a class, we talked about many times when we can be worried or scare, and how important it is to show courage during those times.

Grade 1/2 - . We read the story Super Red Riding Hood by Claudia Davila. This story explained the story of little red riding hood but throughout the story she had many experiences where she would show bravery. As a class, we talked about how we experience many things in life that may be scary, but how important it is to show courage and not give up.

Grade 3/4- We read the story Flying to Neverland with Peter Pan by Phyllis Newman. During the story, Peter was explaining how to fly and about how special Neverland is to him. The children then had to show courage and trust, in finally trying to fly with him. As a class, we talked about when we need to show courage in our lives at school and at home.

Grade 5- Students participated in an activity where students had a chance to write an example of a challenging time that required courage. After all of the students were done writing their answers anonymously, they could 'go fishing' and get an example from the bucket to discuss some ideas in how to handle it with courage and less fear.

Grade 6-8- Students participated in an activity where students discussed examples that require courage, such as standing up for friends and doing what is right. With each example, they tapped on a glass jar with rice in it, while an egg appeared to rise which each tap. As a class, we talked about how a courageous person rises above the occasion that may be difficult.

Year of Mercy

Corporal Work of Mercy:
Clothe the Naked
Spiritual Work of Mercy:
Admonish the Sinner
December Charity:
Christmas presents often include gifts of clothing.  In connection with our monthly works of mercy, we ask that families donate baby clothes (size 0-2T) or other items for Heartbeat during the week of December 12-16.  Thank you.

While you are shopping for clothes, please remember the virtue of Modesty in clothing.  These videos would be informative and interesting to watch with your children for a discussion on the dignity of each person and the virtue of modesty.

2017 Middle School Ski Trip
Mad River Mountain, Zanesfield, OH
February 2, 2017

The annual Saint Rose middle school ski trip is back. The purpose of the trip is to provide our students with the opportunity to try something new, have some fun and bond as middle school students. We will also connect the trip to our science curriculum.

Students will travel by Blue Lakes Bus for this one-day trip. We depart from Saint Rose School at 8:00AM and return around 7:00PM. Students need to arrive and be on the bus by 7:45AM. This is a perfect trip for beginners and more advanced skiers. Lessons are offered free of charge and the staff does a nice job of making sure the kids are ready for the mountain.  All students will be provided a lift ticket, rental, lesson, helmet and lunch. Parents may want to send extra money for snacks during the day as well as a quick stop at a fast food spot for dinner on the way back to school. Space is limited to 100 students. Payment is due Monday, January 9, 2017.

St. Rose understands that skiing is not an interest that all of students share. Students that do not attend the trip will participate in fun activities at school.

Student Cost = $70       Chaperone Cost = $50
