December 22, 2016

The holidays are a time of joy and celebration. However, these same holidays can also be a time of stress, re-played family dramas, overindulgance and reduced self-care. Add to the holiday stress the tribulations of daily life and of this past political season, and there is a perfect storm!

Train your brain to look for happiness rather than focusing on the negatives. Smiling more can change your mood. Laugh and share stories. Families and friends can be a great source of support and fun when you are able to be present with them. Remember, we are all in this together.
Use Your Brain to Enhance Enjoyment. Are You Aware That:
  • Downtime replenishes the brain's stores of attention and motivation and encourages productivity and creativity. Enjoy some quiet time each day.
  • Sleep and exercise enhance positive well being.
  • A ten minute nap will restore your energy and mood, helping you manage challenging family dynamics.
  • Grateful people report lower levels of depression and stress; express gratitude to your friends and loved ones.
  • Think positively- changing the way you look at a situation builds resilience.
  • Drink more water. Dehydration increases fatigue, and can make it harder to focus and moderate moods. As a bonus, water may boost metabolism and help reduce over-eating and drinking.

  • Take Action and Get Positive Results
    • Take time each day to enjoy something about the Holiday season.
    • Exercise: it enhances the bodies ability to deal with stress.
    • Keep a daily gratitude journal; express your thanks with words and actions.
    • Take a cleansing breath in and release the tension in your breath out.
    • Take a walk and enjoy the sights and sounds.
    • Accept the things you cannot change.
    • Let go of past negativity.
Remember: you cannot change other people, you can only change yourself. It is not the events that make us happy or sad; it is our reaction to them.
