A Message from Our Head of School
Dear Friends,

During this season of giving and light, I have reflected on the miracles happening at this school every day. In fact, I have come to expect a miracle each day. Sometimes the miracle is a student figuring out how to use calculus in physics class or a basketball player getting out of her comfort zone and performing beautifully in Robin Hood . Sometimes the miracle is a faculty member finding out that the diagnosis is good, or that her husband's operation went well, or that the adoption is complete. Giving Tuesday was a day full of miracles as we saw 60 people donate more than $10,000. Thanks to the generosity of some parents, that will be matched 1:2, resulting in more than $30,000. And, then, to see that faculty, staff, and the Board of Trustees have 100% participation in this year's Annual Fund warms my heart further and helps me realize how blessed this school really is. We still have more work to do to reach our goal, so thank you, in advance, for the difference you make and for continuing our "miracle a day."

Over the last few weeks, I also have reflected on how the school's roots and history ---   from Ireland and downtown Portland to the corner of Stevens and Walton ---   show a commitment to all. And, while my mind is on a "miracle a day," I don't think any of us on this campus consider kindness, compassion, and respect a miracle. It's what we "do" based on the example and teachings of the last fifty years---    or maybe two thousand. Those of us who have been part of this school---   whether by the name of McAuley, Cathedral, St. Joseph's or MGA---   sometimes take for granted the courage needed to commit to being welcoming and caring for all. No matter your color, religion, sexual orientation, political affiliation, or birthplace...this school is a safe and welcoming community. And, while we consider being welcoming a normal part of who we are and what we do, maybe just as an innkeeper a couple thousand years ago did, I have to pause and give thanks for this place, for that innkeeper and for the miracles that happen each day at The Maine Girls' Academy.

On behalf of the faculty and staff at The Maine Girls' Academy, I want to wish you joy and peace, love and hope. And, as always, thank you for your well-wishing, loyalty, and support.

Sincerely,

Kathryn Woodson Barr

Portland Chapter Alumnae Gathering at DiMillo's

At the end of October generations of alumnae from St. Joseph's Academy, Cathedral High School and Catherine McAuley came together to celebrate each other.

A panel of current MGA students and McAuley alumnae shared memories and experiences and it was not surprising how similar they all were throughout the generations. It is heart warming that the same school spirit of the previous three schools still lives on in the halls of The Maine Girls' Academy.

School Spirit and the Spirit of Service

A 5:30AM start didn't st op our school spirit from shining through during WGME Channel 13's School Spirit Challenge on October 28th. What an amazing morning of fun activities and crazy games all for a good cause raising awareness and over 40,000 lbs of food for The Good Shepherd Food Bank of Maine. And the giving back didn't stop there! After the early morning festivities we had our school wide Community Service Day with groups heading to food banks, retirement communities and more to give back to our community and neighbors.
The McAuley Tea Tradition Continues

On November 11th the school honored Catherine McAuley as it has for years with our school-wide tea. We enjoyed each other's company sharing treats and a cup of tea, a symbol of the warm and caring relationships which were at the heart of her Mercy vision.

We were honored to be joined by many Sisters of Mercy, Alumnae and MGA Families  for the special day. The McAuley Tea continues to bring together the school community in celebration and gratitude for the strong foundation our school was built upon.
