Dear International Law Section members: 
Welcome to the 2017-18 Section year! It is an honor to address you as Chair and to highlight for you the exciting events coming our way in the next year.
Thanks to the leadership of our Immediate Past Chair, Al Lindsay, and the tireless work of our leaders and committees, the state of the International Law Section is stronger than ever before. As reported at our annual meeting, our finances and membership are healthy. The quality of our new website, of our publications, and of our CLE programs is commended throughout the Bar. Our collaboration with other international law organizations, with other Sections of the Bar, and our legislative efforts make concrete our promise to make the Florida Bar International Law Section a platform for Florida's international practitioners to Lead Globally with Information, Innovation and Insight.
Our next big event is the International Law Section Retreat to be held on September 29 - October 1, 2017, at the stunning Hyatt Regency Coconut Point Resort & Spa in Bonita Springs, Florida. Situated along the Gulf of Mexico in Southwest Florida, between Naples and Ft. Myers, the resort offers a multitude of amenities and activities including a secluded beach island, hydro-grid tennis facilities, 18-hole golf course designed by Senior PGA Tour Champion Raymond Floyd, a 19,000-sq. ft. full-service spa, a 5,000 square-foot lagoon pool with a 140 foot water slide and lap pool and six restaurants. As with past Retreats we will do some work and a lot of socializing. We welcome families and significant others and are looking for proposals for our second annual ILS Talks modeled on the TED Talks known to many of you. Please be on the lookout for registration details in the coming days and be sure to contact us if you are interested in giving an ILS Talk.
Another feature of the coming year will be the International Law Section's outreach to our members and potential members outside South Florida. Planning is underway for an event in Orlando in November and for other events in Tampa and Jacksonville in 2018. If you are interested in helping with these events, please reach out to me directly.

iLaw2018 - Call for Proposals
|
Dear ILS Members:
We are now soliciting proposals for the iLaw2018: The ILS Global Forum on International Law, which will take place on February 16, 2018, at the Conrad Hotel in Miami. Similar to the preceding few years, the iLaw2018 will consist of four panel presentations with three simultaneous tracks, as follows: (1) the ICDR arbitration track, (2) the litigation track, and (3) the business transactions track, all in addition to one opening plenary session and one closing plenary session. We will consider submissions that are appropriate for each of the three tracks.
The deadline for initial proposals is August 11, 2017. Please submit your proposal(s) by email to
Ana Barton, Jacqueline Villalba and Kristin Drecktrah Paz at the email addresses indicated below.
Each proposal should contain a suggested title and a description of the panel of no more than 200 words. Identification of speakers is not necessary at this time, but proposals may suggest the type(s) of speakers envisioned to speak, or specific topics covered, on the panel. Please be mindful that the iLaw2018 Steering Committee is committed to, and will ensure, diversity (including, without limitation, gender, racial, ethnic) on all panels.
The iLaw2018 Steering Committee, consisting of the co-chairs, the ILS executive officers, and volunteer members, will evaluate all proposals and timely decide which proposals to accept for the iLaw2018. Based on the limited number of panel presentations during the conference and the potential high volume of proposals, we are unable to select all submissions.

The International Law Certification Committee of the Florida Bar would like to remind members that applications for Florida Bar Board Certification in International Law are due to the Board of Legal Specialization no later than August 31, 2017 in order to sit for the examination in 2018. CLE Carry Over Proposal - Feedback Request
|
Dear ILS Members,
We need your input on a proposed change to the R
ule on Minimum Continuing Legal Education Standards
which would allow a member to carry over excess CLE credits from one reporting period to another. In other words, if you earn more than the minimum required number of credits during 3-year reporting period, the proposal would allow additional credits to be carried over to the next reporting period.
Two proposals addressing this issue have been submitted for consideration (see attached). These proposals are summarized as follows:
- The original proposal from Jay Cohen (Board of Governors Member Circuit 17, Seat 4) would allow a member to carry-over any excess credits (i.e. any credit hours over 33 hours) to the following 3-year reporting cycle without restriction.
- The alternative or amended proposal from the Board of Legal Specialization and Education, would allow a member to carry over only a certain amount of credits to the next reporting period (12 general credit hours, 2 credit hours in ethics, professionalism, bias elimination, substance abuse or mental illness awareness programs, and 1 technology hour)
The Board of Legal Specialization and Education is seeking input from the various sections and their members to these proposals for their consideration at their next meeting in September.

Job Opportunity at the University of Akron School of Law
The University of Akron School of Law anticipates hiring a tenure-track or tenured faculty member with a focus in the area of international and comparative law to begin teaching in Fall 2018. We seek a candidate demonstrating general international law expertise with a preference for private international law, including but not limited to international business transactions, international trade, and/or international commercial arbitration. Both entry-level and lateral candidates are encouraged to apply. The appointment may include opportunities for administrative leadership overseeing study abroad programs, programs for foreign lawyers, and other international programs. We invite you to submit your topics for articles to be included in the
Fall 2017 International Law Quarterly, which will focus on
international dispute resolution.
Feature Articles should be
8-10 pages, double-spaced, and must conform with the
ILQ's Style Guide (which we can send to you if you're interested in submitting an article).
The
Fall 2017 ILQ will have between 10-12 Feature Articles, so please send us your proposed topic so that we can ensure that there is no duplication.
