Run Wild Missoula Executive Director: Respecting Boundaries
by Tony Banovich, Executive Director

It's been a little over a year since Five Valleys Land Trust (FVLT) made the announcement about their work to acquire over 4,000 acres of open space lands on and around Mount Dean Stone on the southeast edge of Missoula.  This project offers a huge opportunity to expand access to trails and outdoor recreation while protecting important plant and wildlife habitat.  To learn more about the overall Mount Dean Stone project, click HERE .

Obviously, this project is rather large in scope and complexity, involving multiple land owners, outright land acquisitions, conservation easements, user agreements and more.  Which means it's going to take some time to have all the puzzle pieces fully in place.

As runners and outdoor enthusiasts, we know how exciting it is to have new trails and landscapes to explore.  But, we also need to be cautious about respecting boundaries as we're out on the mountain.  The entire mountain is not open to public access at this time.  There are numerous private holdings; and, there have been multiple reports of trespassing on private lands and private roads.

Five Valleys Land Trust, The Nature Conservancy, Run Wild Missoula and the other project partners all want to see the community begin exploring the segments of Mount Dean Stone that are publicly accessible.  For guidelines on what parts of the mountain are open for exploration (and which aren't) and how to responsibly access those areas, click HERE for a FVLT project update.

Just as in other areas of our personal and professional lives, respecting boundaries is part of building strong relationships.  In order to make the full Mount Dean Stone project a reality, those relationships will be critical.  So, for long-term access to new trails and open spaces, please practice short-term respect of no-trespassing signs, private property boundaries and landowner requests.

As always, I'll see you on the roads, tracks and trails.
