Member Meeting: 2nd Thursday, 11:15-12:30pm, ESEC

Jan 18 , 2017

2017 is already good for a few surprises.

Last week's Annual Meeting delivered in the "surprise" category with a range of pleasing food adventures like Japanese peanuts and Salvadoran tamales next to your favorite wings, pizza and bowlful of custard. So many compliments, I've included some links below for you to find your way to your next lunch feast.

We also witnessed our silent auction go LIVE midway through the meeting thanks to member Mike Schwartz, impromptu auctioneer, and sponsor MN WILD. The WILD upped the ante when they threw in an additional hour of ice time so two ice time hours and two ice time winners emerged... The big winner of course was ESABA, your association, that received an unexpected double gift.

Exactly the right kind of surprise, but due to the excitement, I forgot an important announcement: The Board has asked me to continue as ESABA Director. Let me just say, I accept.

Pleased to serve you in this way, I look forward to 2017 with hopefully many more positive surprises. Here's one more: the City of St. Paul has just launched its own Business Awards. Now, it would be no surprise to us to see some East Side businesses topping the charts...

But they won't get there unless we act fast and nominate. See below. Let's continue the positive East Side vibe!
2017 ESABA Annual Meeting Highlights
East Side Family Clinic was named East Side Business of the Year. April Arnold with Paris Dunning and Board President Steve Ledin.
We elected some fine folks to our board:  Alex Bajwa, Tom Cook, Julie Johnson and  Marv Koppen . Thanks for joining in service to the East Side on the ESABA Board.

East Side Freedom Library received the Commitment to the Community Award, Peter Rachleff pictured below.

We had excellent food thanks to our sponsor St. Paul Port Authority and these excellent vendors, check them out in the neighborhood :

Thanks to our host for the event - St. Paul Federal Credit Union and to our newest member Alimama's Sambusas who signed up at the event.
Get ready Get Set - Go Green!
A Sustainable To-Go Packaging Ordinance would require food businesses to provide to-go packaging that is truly reusable, recyclable, or compostable. (Similar to an ordinance successfully passed in Minneapolis two years ago called Green To Go.)

What do you need to get ready? Please attend the community listening session to give input on this ordinance:

Announcements and News
SAINT PAUL ANNUAL BUSINESS AWARDS

The newly launched annual Saint Paul Business Awards will honor businesses in seven categories, and winners will be based on nominations from the community.
"Locally-owned independent businesses are the economic engine that create good jobs and grow our tax base," said Ward 7 Councilmember Jane Prince. "We're taking this opportunity to recognize and celebrate the great businesses that make Saint Paul, Saint Paul - and to shout their praises from the rooftops!"

Six of the winners will be selected by a committee of fellow business owners and one award, the People's Choice award, will be selected by the community at large. Nominations are currently being accepted and the deadline for nominations is January 31. Anyone can nominate a business, including a customer, neighbor, employee or owner. Awards will be presented on March 22 at the City Council meeting.
Award Categories
  • Traditions Award - Honoring a business that has been active in Saint Paul for at least twenty years.
  • New Kid on the Block Award - Honoring a business that has opened in Saint Paul within the last five years.
  • Large Business Excellence Award - Honoring a business with at least 50 employees in Saint Paul that cares for its employees and the community.
  • Small Business Excellence Award - Honoring a business with fewer than 50 employees in Saint Paul that cares for its employees and the community.
  • Alice O'Brien Award - Honoring a woman-owned business that is committed to equity and empowerment.
  • Reflecting St. Paul Award - Honoring a business owned by a person of color that is committed to equity and empowerment.
  • People's Choice Award - Honoring a business that is recognized for its excellence by St. Paul residents

Metro State Janitorial Contract Opening

This spring, Metropolitan State University will be issuing a new Request For Proposals (RFP) for janitorial services on our St. Paul campus for three years, with the possibility for contract extensions for up to two more years. The RFP will be announced in early January 2017 (including the date and location of a mandatory information meeting for applicants) and full proposals will be due in early February.
