PROGRAM HIGHLIGHT: Summer Learning Day at Bauer Family Resources
Thank you to everyone who attended Bauer's proclamation of Summer Learning Day! They were happy to welcome Justin Mount from Senator Joe Donnelly's office, Monty Hulse with Indiana Afterschool Network, Officer Amos with Police Lafayette, and faculty members from Oakland High School. They showcased youth artwork and went on a photo scavenger hunt with the kids throughout the community center and the park! GREAT WORK CELEBRATING #SummerLearningDay!

Debbie Zipes To Step Down As Leader of the Indiana Afterschool Network
In preparation for Debbie's departure, the Board of Directors has taken steps to ensure the continued positive impact of IAN across the state. A Search Committee has been formed and the search for her successor is currently open. Read more, including Debbie's farewell letter to the field HERE.

CONGRATULATIONS to Brent Wake, Executive Director, Indiana State Alliance of YMCAs. The White-Riley-Peterson (WRP) Policy Fellowship is a part of a partnership between The Riley Institute at Furman and the Mott Foundation. In the 10-month program, Fellows will study afterschool/expanded learning policy and develop and implement state-level policy projects in partnership with their Statewide Afterschool Networks (the Indiana Afterschool Network) and the national Afterschool Alliance. When the President called for elimination of funding for afterschool, we asked you to act. And act you did: you sent 71,500 emails to Congress, joined 300 face-to-face meetings, set up dozens of site visits with policymakers, and helped hundreds of afterschool representatives make the case for afterschool on Capitol Hill.

Did it matter? YES! We've gone from $0 and 1.6 million kids losing afterschool, to a proposal in Congress that keeps programs for 1.4 million kids nationwide. But the budget battle is far from over.

Now is the perfect opportunity to take stock and determine the path ahead. AFTERSCHOOL FUNDING
Would you like to build your organization's capacity to expand your clients' financial capability?
Prosperity Indiana has been awarded an AmeriCorps State grant to help you do just that. AmeriCorps members in the Indiana Financial Capability Corps (IFCC) will serve for 10 months within community organizations that work with low-to-moderate income families and individuals, and who are interested in integrating financial capability.

The IFCC will use Prosperity Now's tool called Building Financial Capability: A Planning Guide for Integrated Services to implement the integration model. With the help of supervisors, members of the IFCC will develop a strategic design for successful integration using The Guide, national research, and other implementation tools - like the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau's Your Money, Your Goals financial empowerment toolkit - to assist organizations in deciding on the best approach to maximize their impact while educating their clients.

They expect to place 15 full-time (at least 1,700 hours of service) AmeriCorps members at selected nonprofit agencies. AmeriCorps members will be provided extensive training, a living allowance, an education award at the successful completion of their service term, and loan forbearance for qualified student loans. They expect the term of service to be from October 2, 2017 through August 2018.

Advancing Informal STEM Learning
This National Science Foundation program seeks to advance new approaches to and evidence-based understanding of the design and development of STEM learning opportunities for the public in informal environments; provide multiple pathways for broadening access to and engagement in STEM learning experiences; and advance innovative research on and assessment of STEM learning in informal environments. The Caplan Foundation for Early Childhood is intended to be an incubator of promising research and development projects that may ultimately enhance the development, health, safety, education or quality of life of children from infancy through seven years of age across the country. The foundation provides funding in the following areas: early childhood welfare, early childhood education and play, and parenting education.

The Finish Line Youth Foundation, the charitable arm of athletic products retailer Finish Line, provides funding to youth athletic programs and sports-based camps, especially those serving disadvantaged children and those with special needs.

To that end, the foundation administers three grant programs: Programmatic grants, Legacy grants, and Founder's grants.

1) Programmatic Grants: Grants of up to $5,000 will be awarded to nonprofit organizations in support of community-based athletic programs and to established camps that teach active lifestyle and team-building skills.

2) Legacy Grants: Grants of up to $75,000 will be awarded to support new facilities improvements and/or renovations to existing buildings, grounds, and property.

3) Founder's Grants: Grants of up to $25,000 will be awarded for emergency needs that may be keeping the organization from providing current services, such as a natural disaster or other unforeseen fiscal circumstance.

The Home Depot Foundation   offers grants, up to $5,000, to IRS-registered 501c designated organizations and tax-exempt public service agencies in the U.S. that are using the power of volunteers to improve the physical health of their community. Grants are given in the form of The Home Depot gift cards for the purchase of tools, materials, or services. The primary goal is to provide grants and volunteer opportunities to support the renovation, refurbishment, retrofitting, accessibility modifications, and/or weatherization of existing homes, community centers, schools and other similar facilities. Dollar General Literacy Foundation
The foundation is accepting applications for its Youth Literacy Grants program. Grants of up to $4,000 will be awarded to schools, public libraries, and nonprofit organizations in support of efforts to help students who are reading below grade level or experiencing difficulty reading, including those with individualized education plans (IEPs). The Festival Fund was established in 2011 to support and promote the activities of organizations in the greater Indianapolis area that enrich cultural life by celebrating cultural expression and encourage understanding and appreciation for different cultures. Qualifying community organizations may apply to receive funding to support their international or cultural event in grant awards ranging from $500-$2,000. Target Youth Soccer Grants program provides up to $1K of support for player registration fees, player and field equipment, and training and professional development for volunteer coaches. Deadline Aug. 30. http://bit.ly/2vudjAd  

Project Learning Tree is accepting applications from schools and nonprofit organizations for environmental service-learning projects through its GreenWorks! grants program, which is designed to help students make their schools greener and healthier by, for example, implementing a recycling program, conserving water and energy, improving air quality, or establishing a school garden or outdoor classrooms and integrating these projects into the curriculum.

Grants of up to $1,000 will be awarded to support environmental projects that demonstrate service-learning, exemplify student voice, and involve at least one community partner. To be eligible, projects must secure at least 50 percent in matching funds (in-kind acceptable).

Karma for Cara Foundation encourages kids 18 and under to apply for funds between $250 and $1,000 to complete service projects in their communities. TechPoint Foundation for Youth has $500 Robotics Grants available to any 501c3 that does not already have a VEX IQ Robotics team!

Solar Eclipse STEM Resources
The eclipse on Monday afternoon, August 21st will be visible for most of the US. This is a great way to create some interest and engagement in #STEM, and there are many, many free resources available via this link from Astronomical Society of the Pacific. Resources include maps of where and when eclipse viewing is possible, information of how eclipses happen, children's books, and links to live viewing through NASA - National Aeronautics and Space Administration. Afterschool & STEM: System-Building Evaluation 2016
(INCLUDES INDIANA RESEARCH!)
This evaluation is among the first at a large scale to measure the impact of afterschool programs on students' STEM-related attitudes and social-emotional/21st-century skills. The primary goals of this work were (1) to examine levels of change in youth outcomes among programs receiving resources and training support from system-building states; (2) to inform on national trends related to STEM learning, such as gender or grade differences in science interest; and (3) to link STEM program quality with student outcomes and facilitator beliefs. https://www.thepearinstitute.org/publications  

Girls Who Code, the national non-profit dedicated to closing the gender gap in technology
Technology is changing everything about the way we live and work. Computing skills are the most sought-after in the US job market, with demand growing 3X the national average - but girls across the US are being left behind. Today, less than a quarter of computing jobs are held by women, and that number is declining. Clubs are free after-school programs for 6-12th grade girls to use computer science to impact their community and join our sisterhood of supportive peers and role models. With the launch of The Connectory, it's easier than ever for kids to connect with STEM programs and opportunities, and for STEM practitioners to collaborate, develop partnerships, and share resources. This free online collaboration tool gives STEM program providers a chance to find partners based on interests as well as a platform to showcase STEM opportunities to families. 21st Century Scholar Enrollment

As part of the Early Intervention and Prevention (EIP) Initiative, Children's Bureau Neighborhood Alliance for Child Safety (NACS) is the proud facilitator of the national child sexual abuse prevention training program Stewards of Children in Marion County. This national award winning program is a prevention training program that educates adults to prevent, recognize, and react responsibly to child sexual abuse. The Indiana Prevention Resource Center (IPRC) training team provides a variety of in-person and online trainings for anyone who would like to gain more expertise on a topic. MCCOY releases 2017 Youth Activity Directory book, app
The Marion County Commission on Youth, Inc. (MCCOY) recently released its 2017 Youth Activity Directory (YAD), which contains more than 600 listings of summer, afterschool and volunteer programs and events for youth in central Indiana. The app can be downloaded to any Apple or Android smart phone or tablet by searching "MCCOY Youth Activity Directory." D. Susan Wisely Award
Applications are due Monday, August 14, 2017.

The D. Susan Wisely "Youth Worker of the Year" Award will recognize an individual's extraordinary impact on Indiana's youth and support his or her continued professional development. The award is provided courtesy of the D. Susan Wisely Leadership Legacy Fund, a fund of the Central Indiana Community Foundation.

Nominees are free to propose any professional development opportunity and associated expenses, with the exception of IYI events. Proposals need not include a complete budget or brochures - all necessary confirmation and documentation will be obtained from the award recipient after notification.

The recipient will be recognized at the Indiana Youth Institute's Because KIDS COUNT Conference in November 2017. More info HERE.

The National 2017 KIDS COUNT Data Book , released this week by the Annie E. Casey Foundation, ranked Indiana 28th in the nation for child well-being. The annual KIDS COUNT Data Book measures child well-being in four domains - family and community, economic, education and health. Indiana ranks 19th in the economic domain, 31st in the family and community, 35th in health and 14th in education. While there have been many improvements, The KIDS COUNT Data Book reveals some areas of concern for Hoosier children. One of the biggest concerns is that Indiana continues to struggle with the percentage of children living in high-poverty areas. At 13 percent, this represents more than 200,000 children, an 18 percent increase compared to 2008-2012 data.

The Indiana State Museum is proud to offer free museum admission to groups of 10 or more K-12 students visiting from 21st Century Community Learning Centers during school breaks. ISM can help K-12 students meet Indiana Academic Standards in physical science, earth science, life science and STEM-related standards. Research shows that encounters with original artifacts, performances, and hands-on activities, all available at the Indiana State Museum, reach children who do not respond well to traditional teaching methods. Grant Opportunities: Voices for Healthy Kids

Strategic Campaign Funds: (Open RFA grant opportunity) aim to fund strategic issue advocacy campaigns focused on fighting childhood obesity through state, local, and tribal public policy campaigns. The duration of these grants will vary but will generally be 1 year or less. Awards can be made up to $90,000. Applications must be specific to an individual campaign goaled to change public policy in one state, local, or tribal geographic location and must align with one of the six Voices for Healthy Kids policy priorities. Budgets must include one Campaign Coordinator position and a legal contingency of no less than 5% of the operating budget as well as matching funds on behalf of the applicant.  
Rapid Response grant opportunities: aim to fund short-term, reactive projects expected to be pushing policies for passage in the next three to six months and must align with one of the six Voices for Healthy Kids policy priorities. These grants provide strategic and supplemental funding for ongoing state, local, and tribal public policy issue campaigns in order to increase public policy impact in the fight against childhood obesity. Rapid Response awards range from $15,000 to $100,000 and project duration is anywhere between two weeks to six months. Funding is for non-lobbying activities only, must include a legal contingency of no less that 5%, and cannot be used for staff salaries.

Delta Dental Foundation provides financial support through its Brighter Futures Community Grants program to various community organizations and programs which promote/provide oral health care for children. This year, the DDF will be providing $150,000 to support programs which specifically focus on children's oral health. More HERE.
