Dear Friends,

I hope you are enjoying your summer - it's a short season here in Maine but definitely worth waiting for!

Here at MJFF we have been hard at work beginning the process of selecting films for the 2018 Festival. I thought you might be interested in learning more about how this works.

For the last month and continuing into the Fall a small group of Board and staff members under the guidance of VP and Screening Committee Chair Melinda Molin actively seeks information about films that might best advance our mission of showing films that  'enrich, educate and entertain a diverse community about the global Jewish experience.'  We do this by examining what other Jewish Film Festivals throughout the world are showing, by looking through the catalogues of production and distribution companies and by contacting individuals and companies who have helped us find interesting selections in the past. We also examine films from independents who contact us directly. It is no exaggeration to say there is an abundance of wonderful films out there.

In September, our Screening Committee, a dedicated group of Board members and volunteers, will begin to view films, share their thoughts and take part in discussions on which films should be considered for final review. I cannot overstate how appreciative we are for their assistance.

From just the little I have seen so far I can promise that the 2018 Festival will offer a wonderful mix of funny, moving, interesting and enlightening films.

The Portland Chamber Music Festival August 10 - 19

Our friends at the Portland Chamber Music Festival will present their 24th summer season August 10 through 19. Highlights this year include the Elgar Piano Quintet with Cape Elizabeth native (and rising star in the classical music world) Henry Kramer, Mozart's charming Horn Quintet, and, for a grand finale, Dvorak's gorgeous Serenade for Strings with several local musicians sharing the stage with PMCF's internationally renowned resident artists.
